Good News for Divers Traveling to Cozumel

We would like to share the latest official update regarding the customs situation affecting divers traveling to Cozumel.

Following meetings between the State Tourism Secretariat, Customs authorities, dive operators, and business organizations, an administrative grace period has been established through September 1st. During this time, the recently applied inspection criteria will not be enforced while authorities and the diving industry work together to establish clear and consistent guidelines.

This collaborative effort aims to:

✔ Define which diving equipment is considered personal recreational gear.

✔ Establish a clear process regarding any documentation travelers may need.

✔ Update the current criteria so they reflect how recreational divers actually travel with their equipment.

We sincerely appreciate the willingness of the authorities to work alongside our industry toward a permanent solution.

As dive operators, we are actively participating in these discussions because we believe essential equipment such as dive computers and personal action cameras, used to safely enjoy and remember a diving vacation, should continue to be recognized as part of a recreational diver’s personal equipment.

Our commitment is not only to help resolve the current situation, but also to work toward establishing clear, fair, and lasting rules so every diver can travel to Cozumel with confidence for many years to come.

An Important Message to Our Valued Divers and Friends.

As dive business owners with over three decades of dedication to Cozumel’s waters, we want you to know that we hear you, we see you, and we completely share your concern and frustration regarding the recent events.

Licensed dive operators like DIMI Scuba Tours are legally established businesses. We create local jobs, pay taxes, strictly comply with all maritime and environmental regulations, and hold every required permit to operate legally within the Cozumel National Marine Park. Our livelihoods—and those of the wonderful island families who work with us—depend entirely on providing you with a safe, welcoming, and world-class diving experience.

As soon as we became aware of these unacceptable incidents, we took immediate action alongside our community. An official statement was submitted directly to the appropriate authorities. That document reached the Governor’s desk, and yesterday, decisive action was taken with the removal of the Director of Customs in Cozumel.

We know this is only the first step. What truly matters now is ensuring that these situations never, ever happen again.

Every single diver who visits Cozumel contributes far beyond the underwater world. You stay in our hotels, dine in our restaurants, use local transportation, support small businesses, and bring life to our community. The positive economic impact of your visit reaches every corner of our island.

We stand firmly with you in rejecting any practice that damages the trust of our visitors. To anyone who has had to experience this stressful situation: we sincerely apologize. We know you save, plan, and choose Cozumel because you love this island and want to support it.

Today, we raise our voices respectfully but urgently, calling on all relevant authorities to implement permanent solutions. The consequences for Cozumel’s dive industry and our local economy are too high to ignore.
For decades, Cozumel has earned its reputation as one of the world's premier diving destinations. Together, as a community of ocean lovers, we must protect that legacy.

🐢 En Isla Cozumel, la conservación de las tortugas marinas es un esfuerzo compartido.

Cada temporada de anidación, tres programas de conservación trabajan para proteger las playas donde las tortugas marinas llegan a depositar sus huevos:

📍 Campamento Tortuguero San Martín, operado por el Ayuntamiento de Cozumel.

📍 Campamento Tortuguero Punta Sur, operado por la Fundación de Parques y Museos de Cozumel.

📍 Campamento Tortuguero Ixpalbarco, impulsado por la Comisión Nacional de Áreas Naturales Protegidas (CONANP) a través de una brigada comunitaria.

Desde distintos puntos de la isla, con estos esfuerzos se realizan recorridos para registrar y proteger nidos, seguimiento a eclosiones, acciones de educación ambiental y generar información que contribuye a la conservación de estas especies.

Cada temporada representa un nuevo esfuerzo para asegurar que más crías lleguen al mar y continúen su extraordinario ciclo de vida.
