The C-53 Felipe Xicoténcatl wreck is Cozumel’s premier military shipwreck dive. Located approximately 2,000 feet offshore from Chankanaab Park on the island’s western coast, this artificial reef offers a fascinating combination of historical discovery and dense marine life. Originally built in 1944 as the USS Scuffle, an Admirable-class minesweeper for the U.S. Navy during World War II, the ship earned five battle stars for its wartime service in the Pacific. In 1962, it was sold to the Mexican Navy and converted into an Admiral-class gunboat. It patrolled the Gulf of Mexico for decades to counter drug and arms smuggling before being retired in 1999. It was deliberately sunk in June 2000 to alleviate tourist pressure on the surrounding natural reefs
