I had the opportunity to attend the Women 2 Women Coaching gathering by Institut Sukan Negara, a
meaningful space where women coaches across Malaysia came together to learn, share experiences,
and support one another in sport and leadership.
One topic that stood out deeply for me was menstrual health in female athletes.
It’s something for us experience in our monthly cycle, but sometimes we are shy to talk about it. Yet as
athletes and coaches, understanding the menstrual cycle is important for managing energy, recovery,
emotions, performance, and even training planning.
As women, our bodies are not “weak” because of hormonal changes. In fact, understanding our
physiology better can help us train smarter, recover better, and perform more sustainably.
What’s equally important is having a support system.
Sometimes athletes struggle quietly because they feel embarrassed to speak about pain, fatigue,
emotional changes, or irregular cycles. Having coaches, teammates, medical professionals, friends, and
communities that are willing to listen without judgement can make a huge difference not only for
performance, but also for mental and emotional wellbeing.
Support systems help athletes and even coaches feel seen, understood, and safer to communicate their
needs. And I believe this is something we need to continue building more strongly in sports culture.
I truly appreciate conversations like this becoming more normal in the sports industry. The more we
educate ourselves, the more we can create healthier and safer environments for future female athletes.
Thank you to everyone who shared their knowledge, experiences, and vulnerability today. Growth
happens when women support women 💙
