The wrecks of the British capital ships HMS Prince of Wales and HMS Repulse lie off the east coast of Malaysia, about 55 to 68 meters (180 to 223 feet) below the surface. Both rest upside down on the seabed, their hulls broken and scarred by illegal salvage. The sites, once proud symbols of the Royal Navy, are now protected war graves under UK law. Over time, metal scavengers have stripped valuable parts such as propeller shafts and plating, leaving the ships heavily damaged and structurally weakened. Surveys in recent years confirmed severe deterioration, though parts of their hulls, gun mounts, and recognizable outlines still remain beneath layers of silt and coral.

On December 10, 1941, these ships formed “Force Z,” sent to intercept Japanese invasion forces near Malaya. Without air cover, they were located and attacked by waves of Japanese bombers and torpedo aircraft. HMS Repulse took at least five torpedo hits before capsizing and sinking stern-first with 508 lost. HMS Prince of Wales was struck by multiple torpedoes and a bomb, losing power and steering before rolling over and sinking an hour later with 327 dead, including Admiral Sir Tom Phillips and Captain John Leach. Their loss marked the first time modern warships under way were sunk entirely by air attack, ending the battleship’s dominance at sea.
