So with four matches to go, things couldn't be tighter at the top. Matunga cemented their place as the leaders by beating the Rag Tags in a very high scoring match. The match wasn't a nail-biter but it was always close.
In another crucial match, two in form teams faced off. The Syndicate are now on a 5 match winning streak, taking them straight into contention eking out a 1 point win against Zero Gravitas who had racked up crazy scores of 51 and 48 in their previous two matches. This went down to the wire. The Syndicate seem to enjoy one point matches: they lost their first two by a point, won the next two by a point, and after two somewhat less stressful matches won this one by a whisker too.
Aardvarks had a comfortable victory over the Merlions who are now firmly rooted in the relegation zone. It was a commendable performance for a 3 man Merlion team missing arguably their two best players.
CIDs, Remebrance and Caveat are all on 4 wins after CID beat Remembrance and Caveat clobbered bottom placed team Lethe It Be.
How will things play out? Matunga have actually played and beaten all three chasing teams namely the Rag Tags, Aardvarks, and the Syndicate. So the others will have to try to win out and hope that Matunga slip up in one of their remaining four matches. The Rag Tags may have the toughest ask as they have to play both the Aardvarks and Syndicate.
To add spice to it all, the top 3 teams after 7 matches played, are within 2 points of each other in points scored - 286, 284, 284 respectively. It could well come down to that.
At the bottom, next round's match between Merlions and Lethe It Be already has the makings of a relegation decider. If the Merlions lose they are probably doomed. Lethe It Be need to win to have any hope at all of staying alive.
The Sign of Four are seemingly in a healthier position but they play two solid mid table teams next and have a horrific run in facing two championship contenders in their final matches, so they probably have to win at least one of their next two to feel safer. They also have an inferior points scored to both ZeF and Merlions who are on two wins and one win respectively. ZeF have a horrible run in facing Matunga, The Syndicate and Caveat. If they don't win any of those, it could be relegation decider on the final round against Merlions
Syndicate vs Caveat 40 - 39
Zero Gravitas vs ZeF 43 - 39
lethe it be vs CIDs 34 - 38
Matunga vs Merlions 45 - 40
Sign of Four vs Aardvarks 36 - 38
RoTF vs Rag Tags 38 - 39
What a week in the Premier Division. Every match went down to the last set of questions, a number went down to the final question of the entire match. Particularly tough luck was Remembrances who needed just a single question off their Mystery Box to beat the Rag Tags (who had yet another top scoring WQC European import). They missed all three bites of the cherry to lose by an agonizing one point. Remembrances have been the surprise package so far, forcing us to eat our words. They've done very well in close matches each of their weeks - they just couldn't pull it off this time.
It was also heartbreak for Sign of Four who led Aardvarks (albeit missing arguably their best player) almost the entire match and by 2 but who also couldn't get any of their Mystery Box questions. Aardvarks nailed the win on their final question (the Baby Shark one) with a super get.
The Australians had lost both their opening matches by a single point. They found themselves trailing by one but with their mystery box to come. Surely not a third time? No. They got their second question and won by a single point. We mentioned that they had won (and lost) by some big scores last season, but this is insane. At this rate their nerves will be completely shot by the end of the season.
Zero Gravitas rather shockingly lost both their opening matches but played a good match against ZeF who were also on the money with many of their responses. They also needed a single correct answer to secure the win and added a bit of tension by missing their first but got two others right.
The Merlions must be the hard luck case of this round. They're still missing their captain Ravi Avva who is somewhere in China. They faced a very tough team in Matunga who had hammered them by 20 points last season. It was significantly closer this time. The Merlions inconsistent supporting cast delivered the goods but it wasn't quite enough. Their score of 40 was better or equal to the winning score in 4 other matches. It bodes well for when Ravi comes back.
CIDs and Lethe it Be played a match that would decide who would be the only winless team left and the dubious distinction sadly fell on Lethe it Be in another pretty close match. I am sure their luck will change.
There are 7 teams on 1 win and 2 losses as things stand now separated by just 17 points in points scored. It's all very close, and everything could come down to goal difference by the end of the season.
