Learn about the anatomy of the back muscles ✨
1. **Iliac Lat Fibers**: These lower fibers attach to the top of the Iliac Crest. With a diagonal orientation and a lower attachment than lumbar fibers, they serve a unique function. Offering maximum leverage, they excel in pulling the arm down in a vertical line, as seen in traditional lat pulldowns. Most effective when the arm is below 90 degrees of shoulder flexion or when the elbow aligns with the shoulder.
2. **Upper Lat Fibers**: Positioned at the uppermost part, these horizontally oriented fibers primarily extend the humerus, pulling the arm in-line or behind the trunk. Due to their attachment on the humerus, they can internally rotate it. Excessive tightness may contribute to issues like shoulder impingement. These fibers have peak leverage when the arm is less than 45 degrees away from the body. As the arm extends past the trunk mid-line, they also leverage to adduct the humerus, pulling the arm closer to the spine.
