The Full Marathon Menโ€™s Open saw a close finish and a Kenyan sweep with Ezekiel Kemboi pipping defending champion John Nzau Mwangangi to the line to win the gold and the prize purse of US$15,000 (RM61,065.00). Kemboi crossed the finish line in 02:21:19, while Mwangangi claimed the silver in a time of 02:21:27. Moses Kibet Kipsang took the bronze with his time of 02:21:32.

All eyes were then on the Full Marathon Malaysian categories, where the stakes were high for some of the nationโ€™s top long distance runners with KLSCM being the official preliminary selection event for the marathon category for SEA Games 2027. The final stretch saw Yeow Ni Jia arriving ahead to cross the finish line with a new local personal best of 2:33:52 to win the Malaysian title.

Earlier this morning, the Full Marathon was flagged off by the Deputy Minister of Economy, Datoโ€™ Indera Mohd Shahar Abdullah. He was accompanied by Mushahid Syed, the Interim Chief Executive Officer of title sponsor Standard Chartered Malaysia, and Chairman Tan Sri Shahril Ridzuan. Mushahid โ€“ who is also the Interim Head of Coverage, and Chief Financial Officer, Malaysia โ€“ also participated in the ASICS Half Marathon category under the Run For A Reason (RFAR) charity programme, running and raising funds for the Standard Chartered Foundation.

The ASICS Half Marathon was flagged off by Datuk Chang Lih Kang, the Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation. He was accompanied by Boon Tib Soom Nik, Country Manager of ASICS Malaysia Sdn Bhd, Mushahid, Tan Sri Shahril and Bilal Parvaiz, CEO of Standard Chartered Saadiq Malaysia.

KLSCM 2026โ€™s second day saw a total of more than 27,000 runners pounding the pavements of Kuala Lumpur and its highways, passing iconic buildings while pushing forward to meet their personal goals for the race. The first day of races yesterday saw the IHH 10km and 5km categories also flagging off from and finishing at Dataran Merdeka. A record number of 43,800 participants from 53 countries signed up for the 18th edition of the KLSCM - with 3,600 being international participants.

Kemboi, who last raced in the KLSCM in 2023, trained for KLSCM 2026 in the areas of Eldoret, Kenya which had similar conditions to Malaysia.

โ€œI did not really have a strategy for today and came to the race deciding to give it a try. It was hot and humid but I was lucky today,โ€ he said.

In the Womenโ€™s Open, the crown went to Alemitu Ajema Lema of Ethiopia, who finished the race with a time of 02:39:29. The remaining podium positions went to Lucy Nthenya Ndambuki of Kenya who came in second with a time of 02:39:59 while her compatriot Caroline Cheptonui Kilel took third place with a time of 02:40:17.

The Full Marathon Malaysian Menโ€™s category also saw Lai Yi Hng clocking 02:34:16 to come in second after Yeow Ni Jia. National record holder Tan Huong Leong had to settle for third place with his time of 02:39:17.

โ€œI decided to go with the flow today. My goal was to secure a podium spot as well as make the SEA Games longlist and of course, defend the title. I was hoping to clock below 2:35 and because of the competitive field, I managed to get my local personal best,โ€ said Yeow, 26. โ€œI will be taking a little break after this to recover from previous injuries.โ€

In the Full Marathon Malaysian Womenโ€™s category, Esther Joy Chen Hong Li become the newly crowned champion after breaking the tape at 3:05:22 in her very first full marathon race. Second place went to Elaine Koon who registered a time of 03:12:43 while Lai Wei Ling finished third with 03:14:37.

โ€œI decided to give it a shot after heading about KLSCM being the preliminary selection event for the 2027 SEA Games. My coach adapted my training for a marathon block and our strategy was to go big or go home. He gave me a rough pace to follow and my goal was to finish the race. It would have been nice to also clock a Sub-3,โ€ said Chen, 22.

โ€œWe are truly appreciative of the support for KLSCM 2026 that has been shown by the running community and our sponsors and partners. We are humbled by the overwhelming response we have and continue to receive from everyone. This year, more than 3,600 of 43,800 runners have travelled to Kuala Lumpur specifically to take part in the event. We are always committed to providing a world-class race for everyone and try to raise the bar a little higher every year to ensure that KLSCM remains a much sought-after race for runners to look forward to every year. We are also grateful that KLSCM has once again been awarded the prestigious World Athletics Elite Label,โ€ said Rainer Biemans, Project Director of KLSCM and Director of Dirigo Events, the rights holder and organiser of the event.

โ€œWe are honoured to have so many runners include the KLSCM in their running journey and we look forward to helping them rise above their limits each and every time to become the champions that they can be. Not only does KLSCM showcase athleticism, determination and unity in one event, it also lets runners experience more beyond the race and hopefully, they go home with many happy memories,โ€ he added.

โ€œAs always, the health and safety of our runners is paramount and we strive to ensure a higher elevated medical preparedness level every year with aid from our Medic-on the Run team. We are most grateful to all of the medical professionals involved in KLSCM 2026 for their assistance, especially the medical personnel who ran alongside participants during the race,โ€ Rainer further added.

"We're proud to be the title sponsor of KLSCM for the 18th year running and are honoured to have witnessed it grow into Malaysia's premier distance running event. We'd like to thank the team at Dirigo Events for the long-standing partnership as KLSCM continues to notch new achievements, most recently as the official Preliminary Selection Event for SEA Games 2027. This underscores Malaysia as a nation with a strong sporting heritage and culture that resonates internationally," said Mushahid Syed, Interim Chief Executive Officer & Head of Coverage, and Chief Financial Officer of Standard Chartered Malaysia, the title sponsor of the event.

"Beyond that, KLSCM has evolved to be much more than a race. It has become a platform for community inclusion and collective achievement by bringing together runners of different ages, background and nationalities - be it with the goal of challenging themselves or supporting causes that matter, through the RFAR programme. The experience at race weekend is like no other, and it's thanks to the runners for bringing the energy and excitement each year," he added.

KLSCM 2026 also saw RFAR runners opting to support a charitable cause while running in the event, raising more than RM1.1 million in donations even before the race weekend. The RFAR programme is the heart of the KLSCM and a collective effort where the runners turn their strides into a powerful catalyst for change by rallying their friends, family and communities to contribute to the deserving charities in the RFAR. This yearโ€™s returning beneficiaries are the Standard Chartered Foundation, Hospis Malaysia, Kechara Soup Kitchen and Teach for Malaysia, with the Malaysian Congenital Heart Foundation (Yayasan Jantung Kongenital Malaysia) as the new charity organisation joining the line-up this year.

โ€œThe RFAR is an integral part of the KLSCM and we would like to express our heartfelt gratitude to the RFAR runners who have stepped up to raise this record amount of over RM1.1 million for beneficiaries in the programme. Every ringgit raised in the RFAR will help our charity partners make a positive difference in many lives with the work that they do. The overall fundraising remains open until 12 October and we would like to encourage everyone to donate generously to these worthy causes who are working to give many of the less fortunate a better tomorrow,โ€ said Biemans.

The KLSCM is Malaysiaโ€™s premier distance running event and also the first and only race in the country to be awarded the World Athletics Elite Label โ€“ achieving that in 2025 and once again this year. It has steadily grown to become the most anticipated distance running event in Malaysia, attracting thousands of local and international runners annually whilst establishing itself as a landmark running event in the local and global running calendar.

Standard Chartered Malaysia is the title sponsor while global sports brand ASICS and IHH Healthcare are the Gold sponsors. The other official partners are 100 Plus, Counterpain, Dynamo, High5 Nutrition, Seiko and TudungPeople.

KLSCM 2026 is sanctioned and supported by venue host Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL), Malaysia Athletics, World Athletics and the Association of International Marathons and Distance Races (AIMS), the Malaysian Ministry of Youth and Sports, and the Kuala Lumpur Traffic Police. It is also supported by the Malaysian Highway Authority (Lembaga Lebuhraya Malaysia), Konsortium Lebuhraya Utara - Timur (KL) Sdn Bhd (Kesturi), Projek Lintasan Kota Holdings Sdn Bhd (PROLINTAS) and Malaysia Convention & Exhibition Bureau (MyCEB). The event is owned and organised by Dirigo Events.

The first day of the event saw more than 11,500 runners competing in the IHH 10km, and over 4,400 runners participating in the 5km category. There was a festive air at Dataran Merdeka where KLSCM 2026 participants converged at the eventโ€™s old stomping ground for the 18th edition of the KLSCM.

Muhammad Haziq Mohd Hairol Izmi and Mercy Jebiwott took the gold on the IHH 10km podium for the Menโ€™s Open and Womenโ€™s Open categories. Muhammad Haziq finished in 33:54 while Mercy from Kenya crossed the finish line in 37:00.

Aekkarat Meenamai from Thailand took second place in the Menโ€™s Open with a time of 34:22 while Ahmad Arif Ibrahim from Singapore came in third with 34:57.

In the Womenโ€™s Open category, the silver went to Serena Teoh D**g Xiang from Singapore who finished with 39:41 while Malaysiaโ€™s Shayathiri Ratnam took the bronze with 42:16.

โ€œThis is my first KLSCM race. I kept my eye on the menโ€™s leads to push forward and it helped that the weather was cool. I felt good and look forward to running in the KLSCM again next year, maybe in the Half Marathon or Full Marathon,โ€ said the 27-year-old.

The IHH 10km Menโ€™s Veteran category saw Marcus Ong from Singapore topped the podium spot with a time of 36:02. Malaysians Lee Ching Keong and Yong Khong Wei took the remaining podium spots, with Lee coming in second at 37:06 and Yong finishing third at 38:00.

Malaysian women swept the top spots in the IHH 10km Womenโ€™s Veteran category, with Chua Mei Yin crossing the finish line with a time of 45:00. Foo Yin Yin finished second with a time of 46:49 while Lim Pei Ting finished third with 47:17.

The 5km run brought non-competitive runners together with several participants showing up in eye-catching and fun costumes to pep up the run. Some of the more notable outfits included a Tyrannosaurus Rex, and some styled after comic or anime characters.

โ€œI think I speak on behalf of many runners when I say we are all happy and excited to return to Dataran Merdeka. The energy and excitement here today was palpable and we are grateful that KLSCM 2026 was able to happen. We are enthused to be able provide sportsmen and the community with a sporting event that that lets runners of all skill levels come together,โ€ said Rainer Biemans, Project Director of KLSCM and Director of Dirigo Events, the rights holder and organiser of the KLSCM.

โ€œWe believe in giving runners a world-class event for them to shine in, to become the champions that they are, while improving and elevating the standards of distance running in Malaysia overall. We want runners to know that we see their passion for running, their efforts and dedication and we are happy to provide them with that platform for growth and excellence,โ€ he added.

โ€œWe are delighted to return as the Official Footwear and Apparel Partner of the Kuala Lumpur Standard Chartered Marathon for the second consecutive year. KLSCM brings together runners of all levels who share the same passion for running and the drive to challenge themselves, and we are proud to support them with the footwear and apparel they need as they work towards their personal goals. We look forward to celebrating their dedication and achievements once again at this yearโ€™s race. More than just a race, we hope KLSCM continues to inspire Malaysians to move with purpose and experience how a 'Sound Mind, Sound Body' uplifts both physical and mental well-being,โ€ said Boon Tib Soom Nik, Country Manager of ASICS Malaysia.

Dr Shuba Srinivasan, Regional CEO (Central) & Vice President of Clinical Services, IHH Healthcare Malaysia added: โ€œThe Kuala Lumpur Standard Chartered Marathon brings together thousands of people, each with their own reason for being at that start line. Some are chasing a personal best, some are taking on a challenge they never thought possible, but every one of them is choosing to move forward. At IHH Healthcare Malaysia, we want the runners to know they are supported from the moment they start, with more than 400 medical staff from across our six Central hospitals on standby throughout, ready to provide care when needed. For us, it is about taking healthcare beyond our hospital walls, being there for our communities and supporting people as they challenge themselves to go further.โ€

The much anticipated Full Marathon and Half Marathon categories will take place tomorrow and will see fierce competition amongst the top runners. All eyes will be on the Full Marathon Malaysian Menโ€™s category, where the stakes are higher as KLSCM is the official preliminary selection event for the marathon category for SEA Games 2027.

After discussions with the relevant parties, and with the support of co-organisers, Dewan Bandaraya Kuala Lumpur and title sponsor Standard Chartered Malaysia, we regret to announce that the Kids Dash races will be cancelled, in the best interest of the children.

We appreciate the support that has been shown by our runners through this challenging weather situation. We are disappointed but we have to prioritise the health and safety of the children over letting them run in less than perfect conditions.

Parents of Kids Dash participants, please bring your child's race bib to collect their race entitlement at:

Location: Information Counter, Dataran Merdeka
Date: 3 October
Time: 8am - 12pm

To all runners: you know your body best. If you have underlying health issues, please weigh your options carefully before deciding to run. We will continue to monitor conditions throughout Saturday and hope for favourable weather on Sunday.

The Race Entry Pack Collection and the Active Lifestyle Expo will
continue at MITEC until tomorrow.

Thank you for your support throughout this challenging weather situation.

Bhd. today officially launched the RunFest Grand Prix Race 2027, a three-day running and lifestyle event taking place from 26 to 28 March 2027 at KL Wellness City Gallery, with KLWC serving as the Official Venue Partner and co-host of the event.

The launch ceremony was held at the KL Wellness City Gallery, Bukit Jalil, bringing together event organisers, partners and members of the running community to unveil the expanded race format for the 2027 edition.

Following the success of its inaugural edition, the 2027 RunFest Grand Prix Race will introduce a new individual 5km Soloist category, alongside the returning SEKIDEN team relay, offering runners greater flexibility to compete either as individuals or as part of a team.

The event is targeting 2,000 participants, with registration officially opening on 7 October 2026.

Expanding the RunFest Race Experience

The 2027 edition builds on KL RunFest's debut, where the SEKIDEN team relay was the sole race format. This year, the event adopts a Grand Prix race format, introducing competitive heats and finals while retaining the team-based spirit of SEKIDEN.

Commenting on KL Wellness City's involvement in the event, Datoโ€™ Sri Dr Vincent Tiew, Executive Director of Branding, Sales & Marketing, KL Wellness City, said the event complements KLWC's vision of creating an integrated environment where health, wellness and lifestyle come together.

โ€œAt KL Wellness City, we believe wellness is not limited to healthcare. It is also about being active, connecting with the community and creating opportunities for people to make healthier lifestyle choices. RunFest Grand Prix Race brings these elements together in a dynamic and engaging way. We are pleased to support Unikorn Events as the Official Venue Partner and co-host, and to welcome runners, families and the wider community to KL Wellness City.โ€

โ€œWe hope the event will encourage more people to discover the joy of running and active living, while experiencing KL Wellness City as a destination where health, wellness and lifestyle can come together. With the race and festival village taking place within KLWC,

participants can enjoy not only the competition but also a complete community and lifestyle experience.โ€

What is SEKIDEN?

SEKIDEN is the event's Short-Ekiden format, adapted from the Japanese long-distance relay tradition.

Each team of three runners covers a combined distance of 9 km, with each runner completing a leg before handing over to the next teammate.

Unlike conventional relays that use a baton, SEKIDEN uses a tasuki, a traditional cloth sash worn across the torso, which is passed from one runner to the next at the designated exchange zone. The team captain determines the running order.

SEKIDEN will be offered in three categories:
๏‚ทSEKIDEN Men โ€“ 3 pax
๏‚ทSEKIDEN Women โ€“ 3 pax
๏‚ทSEKIDEN Mix โ€“ 3 pax, maximum two men

New for 2027: Soloist 5km Category

New to RunFest Grand Prix Race 2027 is the Soloist category, opening the competition to individual runners over a 5km distance.

The Soloist category will be offered across four divisions:
๏‚ทMen's Open โ€“ 18 to 39 years
๏‚ทWomen's Open โ€“ 18 to 39 years
๏‚ทMen's Veteran โ€“ 40 years and above
๏‚ทWomen's Veteran โ€“ 40 years and above

Soloists will qualify through daytime race waves before progressing to either the Speed Final or Sub Final, subject to the event's race rules.

Participants may also register under a team name, allowing them to compete for a team result alongside their individual placing.

RM13,500 Total Prize Purse

The 2027 edition will offer a total RM13,500 prize purse across the eight race categories.

For the SEKIDEN categories, podium prizes are:
๏‚ท1st Place โ€“ RM1,500 per team
๏‚ท2nd Place โ€“ RM1,000 per team
๏‚ท3rd Place โ€“ RM500 per team

For the Soloist Open and Veteran categories, podium prizes are:
๏‚ท1st Place โ€“ RM500
๏‚ท2nd Place โ€“ RM350
๏‚ท3rd Place โ€“ RM250

Racing Meets a Festival Experience at KL Wellness City

As the Official Venue Partner and co-host, KL Wellness City will host the RunFest Grand Prix Race across all three days from 26 to 28 March 2027.

Beyond the race itself, participants, families and spectators can look forward to a festival village featuring food, games and lifestyle activities, creating an environment for the wider community to come together beyond the running track.

The race pack collection will also take place at KL Wellness City, allowing participants to experience the entire RunFest journey at one location โ€” from race pack collection and pre-race activities to race day and the festival experience.

The collaboration reflects KL Wellness City's broader commitment to promoting active living, community engagement and holistic wellness, while providing a platform for sporting and lifestyle events within its integrated healthcare and wellness township.

Registration for the RunFest Grand Prix Race 2027 opens on 7 October 2026.

For registration and further event information, participants are encouraged to follow the official RunFest channels and Unikorn Events Sdn. Bhd. for updates.
