兄 : The Older Brother

The modern budoka understands a fundamental truth:
Strength is not proven by standing above others, but by investing in those who follow after you.

Being the older brother is not merely a matter of age.

It is a role defined by experience, responsibility, and the example you set.
It means choosing patience over ego, discipline over comfort, and service over self-interest.

If you have walked the path longer, endured more trials, and learned hard-earned lessons, then it becomes your obligation to turn back and guide others forward.

The next generation does not need more critics.

They need leaders worth following—those who train with purpose, prepare diligently, and honor their word. Let your daily conduct demonstrate what honor truly looks like in practice.

Stand firm. Establish the standard. Be the brother they can trust to lead them ahead.

👊🏻 Ichigeki Hissatsu / Ikken Hissatsu (一撃必殺)

The concept of ichigeki hissatsu (一撃必殺) or ikken hissatsu (一拳必殺), meaning "to kill with one blow," is closely related to the idea of "kime" (決め). However, it's important to understand that the primary goal of karate is not to seek out fights or to kill with a single strike. Instead, ichigeki hissatsu reflects a mindset of total commitment and the ability to decisively end a conflict if necessary.

My perspective is that this principle emphasizes the importance of avoiding fights whenever possible. The true mastery of karate is about restraint and discipline. Nevertheless, if a situation arises where a fight cannot be avoided, a karateka should be capable of delivering a single, powerful strike that can end the fight and stop the conflict immediately. In essence, it's about being prepared to neutralize a threat with just one well-placed, decisive blow.

• Meaning and Interpretation: The literal translation of ikken hissatsu (一拳必殺) is "one fist, certain death," implying the ability to end a confrontation with a single, effective strike. Philosophically, it signifies a state of mind where every action is performed with maximum focus and intent to be decisive. The principle encourages practitioners to deliver their strongest possible technique with full power and precision known as "kime", aiming to incapacitate or neutralize an opponent quickly. However it's not always about landing only one strike, but about treating each strike as if it were the only one needed, if the first doesn't succeed, the next should be just as explosive and decisive.

• Origin:
The concept is believed to have originated from the Samurai (侍), emphasizing swift and effective combat techniques. In modern practice, it serves as a reminder of the importance of focus, power and intent in every technique.

Funakoshi Gichin (Founder of Shotokan) regularly used this term, stating that one should never fight, but if it can't be avoided to hit your opponent with everything you've got to assure you return home safely. Which is why he was against kumite, as he believed karate is deadly and shouldn't be played with or turned into a sport.

Fun fact: Point Kumite is based on this concept, which is why as soon as a decisive strike is landed, the fighters stop and reset.

• Training Methods:
Achieving this level of power and decisiveness typically involves rigorous training. Hitting a makiwara (巻藁), heavy bags (サンドバッグ), and practicing tameshiwari (試し割り) (board breaking). These methods help develop the strength, precision, and mental focus needed to deliver a single, impactful strike.

In summary, ichigeki hissatsu or ikken hissatsu is a martial arts ideal that highlights the importance of being prepared to end a conflict with one powerful blow. However, my belief is that the true essence of karate lies in avoiding violence altogether. If a confrontation does occur, a skilled karateka should be capable of stopping it immediately with a single strike. The ultimate goal is peace and restraint, with readiness to act decisively if necessary. Just like the famous Spider-Man quote "With great power, comes great responsibility". Osu! 👊🏻🥋
