On 21 August, the Shuttle Time Senior Programme was successfully launched in Beijing through a collaboration between the Capital University of Physical Education and Sports (Beijing Institute for International Olympic Studies) and the Senior Sports and Health Branch of the Beijing Society of Gerontology and Geriatrics, with equipment support from Yonex Sports (China) Co., Ltd.
A total of 40 seniors, aged between 60 and 73 and representing more than 10 local communities, took part in the first session. Led by former Chinese national team player and international champion Professor Jie Xiao, alongside certified Shuttle Time Senior instructors, participants were introduced to badminton through a safe, inclusive, and enjoyable learning environment.
The opening session focused on racket grip, hand-eye coordination, and underarm shots through a variety of engaging activities designed to build confidence, encourage movement, and promote lifelong participation in physical activity. Participants responded enthusiastically, highlighting the programme's welcoming atmosphere and expressing excitement for the remaining seven weeks.
The programme aims to support BWF's vision of "Badminton for All" and encourage more older adults to embrace an active and healthy lifestyle through badminton.

I grew up in Klipplaat, a small town in the Eastern Cape. Growing up in a close-knit community taught me the importance of family values, respect, and supporting others. My childhood was simple and community-focused, which helped shape my strong work ethic and caring attitude toward people.

I first saw badminton in a small town called Somerset East in the Eastern Cape in 1990, thereafter playing badminton in a church hall in Gqeberha . That was where I was introduced to the sport and where my interest in badminton started to grow.
When I first saw badminton, I was struck by how fast and skillful the game was. The speed of the shuttle and the quick movement of the players made it very exciting to watch. I also liked that it is a sport that can be played by people of all ages, from young children to adults, which makes it very inclusive and enjoyable for everyone.

I am a player who really enjoys playing the sport, and I am also actively involved in coaching children of all ages. I am a Shuttle Time trainer and I enjoy sharing the knowledge and skills I have learned with others and helping young players develop.
๐๐๐ฆ๐จ๐ซ๐๐๐ฅ๐ ๐๐ฏ๐๐ง๐ญ๐ฌ
One of my most memorable experiences in badminton was when our Under-15 team played in the semifinals of the South African U15 Badminton Championships. We however finished in 4th place that year, which was very special because every player in the team was a child I had coached from development level.
Another proud moment for me is that three of the players I am currently coaching have been selected on the list for the Badminton South Africa National Squad. Seeing young players grow and reach these levels is extremely rewarding and one of the most meaningful parts of being involved in the sport.
๐๐ก๐๐ญ ๐๐๐๐ฆ๐ข๐ง๐ญ๐จ๐ง ๐๐๐๐ง๐ฌ
Badminton means a lot to me. It is not only a sport that I enjoy playing, but also a way for me to develop and mentor young players. For me, badminton is about passion, discipline, and creating opportunities for young players to develop their skills and confidence both on and off the court.

My experience in developing badminton in the community has been very rewarding. I have been involved in introducing the sport to children at development level and coaching players of different ages, race groups and communities.
One of the most rewarding parts has been seeing children progress from beginners to competitive players, with some even being considered for the junior national squad. It is very fulfilling to know that the work we do in different communities helps to grow the sport and create opportunities for young players. It is also rewarding to see the smiles and enjoyment on the faces of these children.

Shuttle Time has made a huge difference in my region. Without Shuttle Time, there would be very little development of badminton in our communities. Many children would never have been exposed to the sport or had the opportunity to learn basic skills.
Through the programme, children from different communities and backgrounds can discover badminton, develop their abilities, and even pursue the sport further. It has been a vital tool in growing the sport and giving young players opportunities they might not have had otherwise.

I have seen first hand how exposure, encouragement, and proper guidance can unlock a childโs potential, regardless of their background or skill level. It has taught me patience, the value of community involvement, and how sport can positively shape young peopleโs confidence, discipline, and teamwork skills.

My childhood was beautiful and happy. I grew up surrounded by my family (my mom, my grandmother, my uncles and cousins and I spent a lot of time playing with friends from the neighborhood. Play was always a fundamental part of my life.
I was a good student and enjoyed learning, but I was also fortunate to live a very active childhood, full of traditional games and outdoor activities. We played everything: football, burns and many popular games that I remember with affection today. My mom worked a lot, so after school, play was the space where I could share, have fun and also discover who I was.
Today I understand that those experiences greatly influenced who I am and what I do. That is why I love my profession and see sport, especially badminton, as a powerful tool for the integral development of people, for wellbeing, respect, fair play and healthy competition.

I learned about badminton towards the end of 2018 and early 2019 during a sports expo held on the Malecรณn del Salado, in Guayaquil, organised by the Ecuadorian Olympic Committee. I was participating as a volunteer in the Sports for All Commission and I was invited to attend this event where different sports were presented. My friend Carlos Jรกcome introduced me to Emilio Zambrano, who was working in the dissemination of badminton through the Shuttle Time programme. Thanks to that meeting I was able to get to know the sport more closely and it awakened in me a great curiosity to learn. From there I began to train in badminton, taking courses such as Shuttle Time, coaching courses and also referee courses.
That process allowed me to participate in 2019 as a national referee in the South American Badminton Championships held in Guayaquil. Since then I have continued to be linked to this sport, working enthusiastically in its dissemination and development.

Since I learned about badminton, my relationship with this sport has been constant and very enriching. Little by little I learned more, training and training, not only through courses, but also in a self-taught way.
I participated in initiatives such as the โI am Olympicโ programme of the Ecuadorian Olympic Academy, where we visited schools and colleges to bring students closer to different sports disciplines. As a Physical Education teacher I have always tried to include badminton in my classes. I remember with great affection an institution where I was able to present it for the first time in a formal way. At the beginning there was some resistance because many students were more used to football, but when they started playing the change was incredible and badminton ended up being part of the schoolโs sports culture.
Later, when I joined as a teacher in higher education in the Sports Training career, I also had the opportunity to use badminton within the training of students, both as a pedagogical tool and from a recreational approach. In addition, I have always sought to share this sport with my community. I have organised free spaces for children and young people to get to know it and practice it, and I am also part of the ยจDon Qยจ training club, where we teach badminton for free.
๐๐๐ฆ๐จ๐ซ๐๐๐ฅ๐ ๐๐ฏ๐๐ง๐ญ๐ฌ
One of the most special has been being able to share this sport with my family. They all started practicing it: my children, my husband, my mom and even some nephews. Over time this experience became even more meaningful because my mom and husband also took courses to coach and referee in badminton. Both are physical education teachers.
My children participated in the South American Badminton Championships representing the Ecuadorian Federation. Living that experience and representing their country was very meaningful for us. Another special memory was participating as a national referee in the South American Badminton Championships held in Guayaquil in 2019.
I also have very valuable memories of projects where I have been able to teach badminton to children and young people, such as the Seeds: Sowing Badminton, promoted by the Ecuadorian Olympic Committee and the DASE Foundation of the Municipality of Guayaquil. The interest in badminton continues in my family, as my two daughters will participate in the next course of badminton coaches of the Ecuadorian Federation. Badminton has had a very positive impact on my life and that of many people close to me.

It has been a very enriching experience and also full of challenges. I have had the opportunity to spread this sport in schools, community projects and training spaces. One of these spaces is the Don Q training club. This club has a very strong tradition in handball, so introducing badminton was a challenge. However, over time several young people began to be interested in this sport and today there is a group that enjoys practicing it and learning more. My desire is to continue developing it so that more young people can get to know it and in the future also participate in tournaments.
Over time more and more students, teachers and coaches have become interested in knowing and learning about it. I also want to recognise the work of our Shuttle Time coordinator in Ecuador, Emilio Zambrano, the Presidents of the National Federation John Zambrano Haboud, Thomas Pellehn Drey, Eng. Carlo Salinas as Vice President, who have been key in the dissemination of this sport and in supporting those of us who want to develop it in our communities.

One of the most important is that when a person has a clear purpose and truly believes in what they do, they always find the way to achieve it. This sport has also helped me to strengthen my character and to understand how passion and conviction can inspire others. For me, badminton has been a great school of life. Badminton for me is not just a sport: it is a tool to sow well-being, form better people and show that through fair play you can also build a more harmonious society.

I was into sports since I was a very little kid. I always played different sports outdoors with my dad and older kids. I never enjoyed studying, but I still pushed myself through high school. My best memories are from the sports high school where I was able to play badminton three mornings in a week and it was part of the school programme.

I first started to play badminton with my dad in a hall near our home. Around this time was the 2004 Olympic Games where I saw world class badminton the first time. I found it such an intense and fast paced game and thought it was fascinating.
I went to a local club and started to practice. I started to get some success quickly so that boosted my motivation to practice. I started winning medals in national junior championships later and really fell in love with the game. Badminton became the most important thing in my life and I wanted to make a career out of it.
As a player I couldnโt achieve what I wanted to go but I enjoyed the journey so much that I kept playing internationally until I was 30.

The BWF World Junior Championships in Japan were memorable, as I played against the best junior players in the world. Later on, coaching education stints abroad have been very memorable as I made many new friends.
I still love to play from time to time, but mostly itโs nice to give back to the sport by helping other people. Badminton is my passion and time flies when being in the hall.
