THAILAND WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL

30 Years of Development — What Malaysia Can Learn
THAILAND’S HISTORIC ACHIEVEMENT

Thailand has qualified for the Olympic Games for the first time in history — Los Angeles 2028.
They achieved this by:
• Defeating Japan 3–1 in the semifinal
• Defeating China 3–2 in the final
• Winning the Asian Championship in front of their home crowd
This was not luck.
It was the result of decades of planning, development and commitment.

WHAT MADE THAILAND SUCCESSFUL?

1. A Clear Playing Identity
Thailand developed a style based on:
• Speed
• Movement
• Combination play
• Technical quality
• Teamwork

2. A Strong Player Pathway
They created a system to:
• Develop young players
• Prepare the next generation
• Replace experienced players smoothly
• Give players regular international exposure
• Transfer knowledge from senior players to younger athletes

3. Support from Many Stakeholders
Thailand’s progress involved cooperation between:
• Government
• National volleyball association
• Coaches
• Schools
• Clubs
• Sponsors
• Supporters

4. Long-Term Commitment
Thailand faced disappointment and failed to qualify for the Olympics several times.
However, they did not abandon their long-term plan.
They continued to:
• Develop players
• Improve coaching
• Compete internationally
• Strengthen their system

THE BIG LESSON FOR MALAYSIA
Volleyball development cannot depend only on organising tournaments.
Tournaments are important, but they must be part of a complete development system:

GRASSROOTS --> YOUTH DEVELOPMENT --> ELITE DEVELOPMENT --> NATIONAL TEAM --> INTERNATIONAL COMPETITION

WHAT MALAYSIA NEEDS
Malaysia needs:
• Continuity between generations
• Better coach development
• Regular high-level training
• More international competition
• Stronger cooperation between organisations
• A clear player-development pathway
• Support from schools, clubs and academies
• Government and private-sector involvement
• A long-term national development philosophy

Most importantly, the system must continue even when leadership changes.

THE KEY QUESTION
Instead of asking:
“Why can Thailand do it?”

We should ask:
“What system did Thailand build to achieve this success — and what system are we building for Malaysian players?”

FINAL MESSAGE

Success Is Celebrated in One Night.
Development Is Built Over Generations.

PLAY IN VICTORY!

A PATHWAY NOT A DEAD END

SUKMA should be a stepping stone, not the destination.

Building the right path, creating a stronger future.

Development Question:
What are our neigboring countries doing between roughly U15 and senior level that enables talented juniors to become internationally competitive senior players?

For Malaysian volleyball, after SUKMA, the more useful follow-up is identifying how many players from this generation progress into sustained high-performance training.

SUKMA should ideally function as one stage of a pathway:

School/Club → District Youth → State Youth → SUKMA → National Development Squad → Senior National Team

rather than becoming the end point for talented youth players.
