Goju-Ryu Karate General Syllabus:
1. Basics: Stances and Footwork, Strikes and Blocks:
Children will learn the fundamental stances and how to move in them, straight punch, low block, and middle block.)
This is also for body conditioning in preparation to learn âKataâ and âKumiteâ (Sparring)
2. Kata and Kata Tournaments under Malaysian Karate Federation
Kata are pre-arranged sequences of movements that help students practice techniques and develop muscle memory, and the applications of these movements in basic self-defense. Children will learn various Kata appropriate for their skill level.
4. Kumite and Sparring Tournaments under Malaysian Karate Federation:
Kumite refers to sparring or partner drills. The progression is from solo drills to develop muscle memory, to partnered reflex drills on various attack, defense and counterattacks. Children will gradually learn how to engage in controlled sparring sessions with a focus on timing, distance, and technique.
5. Self-Defense Techniques:
Children will be taught basic self-defense techniques and strategies for dealing with potential threats or attacks, including self restrain, avoidance and situation awareness.
6. Fitness and Conditioning:
Physical fitness and conditioning are important in martial arts. Kids will engage in exercises and drills to improve their strength, flexibility, and endurance.
7. Etiquette and Dojo Rules:
Students will learn the importance of respect, discipline, and proper etiquette within the Dojo.
8. Gradings and Belt Ranks:
Students will have opportunities to take gradings or belt tests to advance to higher ranks (belts) as they demonstrate their proficiency in the techniques and etiquette of Goju-Ryu Karate.
9. Weapons:
As students progress (usually after attaining Black Belt), they will have the opportunity to learn skills and Katas involving weapon, including the Nunchaku, Bow (stick) and Sai.
