HISTORY OF ASEAN FOOTBALL FEDERATION Humble Origins

Every great story has a humble beginning and so it is with the history of the ASEAN Football Federation. H.

It started way back in 1982, in what was initially an informal meeting between several members of the ASEAN family, turned out to be the foundation of a Federation that is responsible for one of the biggest football championships in the world, the AFF Football championship. Steven Hall was the star as Australia defeated Saudi Arabia 5-4 on penalties in the AFC U20 Asian Cup™ China 2025 final at the Baoan Sports Centre Stadium on Saturday.

With the final ending 1-1 after 120 minutes, goalkeeper Hall saved Bassam Hazazi’s spot-kick as Australia won their first title.

Back-to-back champions Johor Darul Ta’zim (JDT) will face Sri Pahang FC in the 2024/25 Malaysia Cup final, set for April. JDT secured their spot after a dominant 6-1 aggregate win over Terengganu in the semifinals, while Sri Pahang edged past Sabah FC 3-2 on aggregate. Both teams are aiming for their fifth Malaysia Cup title, with JDT having won in 2017, 2019, 2022, and 2023, while Sri Pahang previously triumphed in 1983, 1992, 2013, and 2014.

Football Australia’s 2024 National Participation Report shows record growth in grassroots and community football, driven by the legacy of the 2023 Women’s World Cup and the success of the Matildas and Socceroos. Football remains Australia’s most popular and fastest-growing sport, with participation up 11% to 1.9 million. Women’s football grew by 16%, registered coaches by 19%, and volunteers by 26%, while outdoor football saw a 10% increase.

The Philippines will be making their debut at the AFC Women’s Futsal Asian Cup™ 2025 to be hosted by China in May.
Despite recording a 2-1 loss to Australia in their final qualifying game in Group C, the Philippines still managed to make the cut to the AFC Women’s Futsal Asian Cup™ 2025 when they emerged as the best third-placed team ahead of Palestine, Myanmar and Kyrgyztsan.
