How To Train For Kayaking: Final Thoughts
I hope this offered some helpful insight regarding how to train for kayaking. And sure, I still stand by what I said at the beginning:

The best way to get better at kayaking is to get out on the water and do it.

Set aside time each week, preferably two to four sessions, to target your paddling stroke muscles, though. A few simple training exercises could do wonders for your strength, endurance, efficiency, and balance, and lessen your risk of injury – on top of making each paddling session more enjoyable.

Now is the perfect time to start working on your kayaking performance.

So, why not try some of these strength training for kayaking moves today?

If you’re still wondering why you need to train for kayaking, I’ll list a few compelling reasons:

Developing Your Stability & Core – Balance and stability, both rooted in your core, are crucial for maintaining optimal proprioception, posture, and control while paddling. Strength is king, but it’s the core that encourages a proper paddling motion.

How To Exit A Kayak At Beach Or Shore?

Approach The Shore – Pick your take-out spot and direct the kayak’s bow so it’s perpendicular to it.

Beach Your Kayak – Paddle forcefully – enough to pick up some speed, and beach the kayak’s bow. Experience taught me that picking up the pace as I approach the shore helps to beach the ‘yak enough for the sand and gravel to keep it in place.

Secure Your Paddle – Put your paddle out of the way, preferably behind the cockpit or under the deck line.

Lift Yourself Up – Hold onto the sides of the cockpit – or hull if you’re in a SOT kayak – and lift yourself from the seat up onto the back of the cockpit. I find that doing a little wiggle helps you get out more easily.

Exit The Cockpit – Swing your legs across the cockpit and step out one foot at a time. Ensure your feet are firm on the ground before standing up; you don’t want to slip and fall accidentally.

What Happens if You Exceed a Kayak’s Maximum Weight Capacity?

While most kayaks are sturdy and designed to stay on the water, an excessive amount of weight combined with the forces of nature can challenge even the most experienced kayaker.

While most manufacturers will tell you what a kayak’s maximum weight capacity is, it’s not recommended to always load up your kayak close to that capacity for extended periods.

Constantly hovering close to max weight is an excellent way to tank your kayak’s stability on the water. It makes it much more likely for your kayak to flip, and if your gear isn’t secured, it may become damaged, and even if it is, it may be difficult, if not impossible, to retrieve the sunken kayak and your gear.

How To Make a Kayak More Buoyant

Increasing buoyancy is all about adding more flotation power to your kayak. The best way to do this is with equipment designed for it; anything that helps a person float makes watercraft more buoyant::

Pool Noodles
Flotation Bags
Beach Balls

All the equipment listed above is capable of increasing the buoyancy of your kayak – but you’ll need to know how to use it to make your kayak more buoyant. Using any of these objects is going to require a little bit of creativity and DIY.

So, how can pool noodles, beach balls and floatation bags help to increase the buoyancy of your kayak?

Learn the Paddling Techniques That Keep You Stable
Good, efficient paddling technique is another important behavior modification for anyone operating a kayak at or near weight capacity.

Good paddling technique is all about keeping stable and propelling yourself efficiently. Whereas bad paddling technique is all about sacrificing form for more speed – while you can get away with this when you don’t have weight, it’s a different story when you’re loaded up.

Poor paddling technique causes rocking and side-to-side motion, which can quickly lower your stability. It can also cause a kayak to flip if you’re at your weight capacity. Typically kayaks are very stable, but the relation between weight and stability means that if one goes up, the other goes down.

What Equipment Do I Need for This Kayaking Strength Workout?

This workout is written with the assumption you have access to resistance bands and/or dumbbells. But, any item that you can safely use to provide moderate to heavy resistance against your muscles can work. A few notes on equipment:

Resistance bands are relatively inexpensive, and do not take up a ton of space. However, if you're borrowing bands or digging them out of your attic, check them for durability, as the elastic on the bands can degrade overtime, making them susceptible to snapping.

What Muscles are Used in Kayaking?
The muscles used to paddle a kayak include:

Back
(latisimus dorsi, rhomboid, trapezius, erector spinae)

Shoulders
(lateral and anterior deltoid, teres major)

Chest
(pectoralis major)

Arms & Hands
(biceps, triceps, forearms, & grip muscles in hands)

Abdominals
(external obliques)

Hips/Legs
(for stability)

Paddling’s most fundamental stroke,
the one you will spend most of your time doing, involves more than arm power. It’s important to engage your stronger torso muscles (core and back) to do most of the work.

Double-check how you’re holding the paddle. Now you’re ready for the three phases of the forward stroke:

The catch phase:
Wind your torso and immerse your blade fully on one side of the boat next to your feet.

The power phase:
Rotate your torso as the blade moves behind you. Follow the in-water blade with your eyes and your torso will follow.

Focus, too, on pushing against the shaft with your upper hand as you move.

The release phase:
When your hand reaches just behind your hip, “slice” the blade out of the water.

Know Your Paddle Blades
Are the blades matched (parallel) or feathered (at an angle to one another)? It’s easier to learn with matched blades. If yours are feathered, look at the shaft’s center for a push-button and holes circling the shaft. Press the button and rotate the two shaft halves until the blades are parallel.

Are the blades asymmetrical?
The answer is “yes” if one side of each blade is a little shorter than the other. (This can be subtle, so look closely.) This shape helps the paddle track straight (not spin) as you pull it through the water. If you see a uniform oval instead, then you have “symmetrical” blades. You can learn to paddle with either blade type—you just need to know which you have.

Are the blades slightly concave (curved)?
The answer is typically “yes,” so pay attention to where that concave side faces when you grip the shaft. This shape lets you "grab" more water for a more powerful stroke.
