One from the Covid lockdown times.. and the desperate attempt to keep movement going…and adjusting to fitting yourselves into screens..

Those days when your only stage was the porch of your home, and your only troupe consisted of raindrops, rustling leaves, chirping birds, the wind or the occasional thunder.

Slowly inching towards regular riyaaz. Today’s agenda was revising the first half of Leelanidhi, and slowly letting muscle memory take over.

A sultry Sunday night practice with my little one ensuring the frame never goes empty, and no crawling or flying beings can disrupt my practice. πŸ˜„

Any time I struggle to return to my usual hourly practice, I seek refuge in Batu. Batu is often regarded as the β€œgymnasium of Odissi”. The technical training ground for correcting body alignment, enhancing strength, stamina and improving body coordination.

Batu Nritya is a foundational pure dance item in Odissi that showcases the dancer’s mastery of technique, rhythm, posture, and sculptural movement.

When I started after a long break, my muscles were screaming in pain and distress, and my focus was wavering. My movements are rusty, but the body and mind feels rewarded. With more practice, we’ll reach where we want to very very soon. πŸ€—

Traditionally, Batu is performed without a narrative storyline. Instead, it focuses on:

* Precise footwork and rhythmic patterns
* Characteristic Odissi postures such as Chowka and Tribhangi
* Graceful body movements and transitions
* Depictions of playing musical instruments through stylized gestures
* The harmonious integration of movement, music, and rhythm
