Did a quick bridge hop tonight. Peanuts are super thick throughout the back. They made it tough to compete for any attention from scaly denizens of the deep. I managed to land a nice flounder, and dropped two others. Lots of hits from smaller ones. No stripers, or blues to be found, or weakies. I skipped quite a few spots due to the wind. But given what I saw tonight, it should be a fun Fall run.

What an awesome day! I had Damien, Alex, and Joe out for day of fishing. We had perfect conditions too; calm seas, nice breeze, not too hot. Just perfect. We even had my first choice of spots all to ourselves. Couldn't ask for much more.
I set up on our first drift and we got covered up with little sharks. Looked like small black tips, or maybe spinners. We watched them cruising around the boat and then we noticed that there were some good sized cobia mixed in with them. We put out two rods and landed a few of the zippy little sharks. No luck with the cobia. Then, as fast as they appeared, they vanished.
We started drifting for flounder. Couldn't ask for nicer drifts either. .5mph, right down the structure. And those nice drifts paid off too. Alex was the hot rod on the day, she schooled the boys. Flounder and sea bass were coming over the gunnell just as fast as they could reel them up. All the sea bass were always just shy of keeper size. Many of the flounder were also, just shy of keeper size. We did manage to put two 20" and a 19" flounder in the cooler. Then, when things slowed up a bit, I dropped a bucktail tipped with a strip bait down. It got hammered! After a brief, but fun battle, I landed a fat 26" flounder. Joe was perfect on the net.
We also landed a bluefish, a bunch of croakers, and sea robins.
So, overall, we had a really fun, fish packed day. We even saw a small blue launch out of the water in the back bay, and a houndfish go airborne chasing something out in the ocean. And there was a ton of bait out there. It's shaping up to be a fun Fall for fishing. Thanks for a great day Damien, Alex, and Joe!

Well, if nothing else, I have the prettiest office around. Gorgeous morning. Perfect weather. Locals summer at it's finest. I met up with Steve and Pete to fish the surf. We pretty much just soaked lines all morning.
The sea gulls gave us fits early on, flying low and crashing into the lines. Fortunately, none became entangled. But they made the rods bounce and got us excited.
We did eventually catch a small doggie, which volunteered to try to larger quarry. I must've pi**ed off the Fish Gods, because we never got another touch. Nada. I offered to try another beach, but the boys said they were fine where we were. So, we stuck it out.
We did have quite the show for a spell. About 100 sea gulls and other birds were bombarding the waters surface about 400 yards out. You could see fish boiling beneath them. It was fun to watch. Made me wish we were in the boat. Even the ospreys were cruising at high altitude with little to no luck. It was just that sort of day. One damn doggie...

Had a really fun trip today. Not because we caught a lot, we didn't. It was Nico's enthusiasm and love for all things fishing. Ken and Nico joined me today in hopes of getting out on the reef for some flounder action. Nico hasn't caught one yet. Or a doggie. I had hopes to remedy that today.
We cleared the inlet and found that it was a lot bumpier than called for. Couldn't see us making the run and getting beat up and soaked for a definite maybe. So, we stayed inside and chased birds for awhile.
The schools of bait were immense. Top to bottom thick. We'd post up over them and you could see spinner sharks, and all sorts of green/blue speedsters zipping through the water. Bait was spraying here and there. Birds were crashing down. It was a beautiful in a chaotic fashion. Ken and Nico cast a variety of jigs into the fracas, got hit and followed a bunch, but never came tight.
We decided to switch up tactics and try trolling. We put out a four rod spread and got whacked a bunch of times before we finally came tight. Nico reeled in a nice houndfish. Those teeth are sharp! Few other bumps after, but no hook ups. We decided to head in and try our luck in the back.
We drifted a variety of areas and caught a few pesky little sea bass. And Nico finally got his doggie. Unfortunately we never got his flounder. Pretty sure Ken had one hooked up at the very end of our trip, but it spit the hook.
We called it a day just in time to beat the torrential cloud burst. Well, they made it, I got slightly caught. I needed a shower anyway. I got a text a while after I got home, and I'm happy to report, they hit Grassy Sound Pier after lunch, and Nico got his flounder! Way to go Nico! And thanks for a fun day!

What a difference a day makes. Had the pleasure of guiding Ed and Darren this morning on a surf fishing adventure. We met up on the beach just as the sun was rising out of the sea.
We set up the rods and it didn't take long for the fish to find us. Well, the doggies. The boys reeled in quite a few doggies to start the day. Then, for whatever reason, seagulls decided to kamakazi the rods. I ended up untangling two laughing gulls, and a herring gull from our lines. Always a joy. They are such pleasant creatures.
After the aerial attack we landed a kingfish and a few more doggies. And then toward the top of the tide the action stopped. The wind came up. White caps formed. The rods were still. We decided to head over to try the Delaware Bay side.
After a quick ride We were set up and back in action. The rods were bouncing shortly after being deployed. But, we kept missing. Then we found out who the nibbling culprits were. We were being assaulted by tiny weakies and kingies. Finger sized fish! Then I figured out that ifbI cast into the cleaner water, rather, the cleaner looking water, we landed fish. Lots of spot, some little kingfish. Weakfish, and silver perch. All small, but fun nonetheless.
So, lots of great conversations, laughs, and good all around fun. Ed and Darren were a blast. And despite the dinky fish, it was a great morning!

Great morning on the beach today! Margaret and her crew came down to see what they could catch. Early on it was a doggie fest, one after another. The kids had a ball reeling them in and playing with them. Then some big herring gulls moved in and I suggested they make their day and toss a few to them. We'll, they just thought that was the funniest thing ever. Suffice to say, there were some fat, dumb, and happy gulls on the beach today.
Later in the outgoing tide the kingfish finally decided to bite, and some nice sized blues too. We even got a nice little flounder. But the majority of the fish caught were doggies. We did manage a nice little bullnose ray that put up a spirited battle. We lost something else that bent the rod pretty hard then vanished.
So, all in all, everyone was happy and had a great time. They even got some fillets for making some kingfish po boys. If you know, you know. If you don't, you're missing out!

Had a really fun day out of the wrecks and reef today with Jonathan and company. Our first stop was nonstop annoyance bites. Little sea bass tearing up our baits. We had a few triggers follow our baits up, but couldn't get them to bote when we tried for them. Then, we had little mahi's stealing our baits. Couldn't hook them either. When I set up a few rigs to try, they vanished.
Ran to the reef and worked over the rubble. The boys hauled in weakies, blues, sea bass, croakers, flounder, and a skate. We ended up with a 20" and a 22" flounder for the table. The other 30 or so were short. I won't mention his name, but a certain someone tried to lift a keeper, after I vehemently instructed everyone never to try lifting a big flounder. That was a tough lesson.
Anyway, we had great conditions today; calm seas and super blue, clear water. The only downside to the day is I ran over something and cracked up my transducer. Might be time to invest in a through hull. Oh well, crap happens...

I really need to do better at posting...
So, I arrived at the beach this morning, well ahead of my group. I set out two rods to see what, if anything was biting after all the rain. I pulled in four little doggies. The herring gulls got a nice breakfast.
Matt, Olivia, and Hank finally arrived, two others had to bail out. We gave the fish a half hour to bite, but nothing materialized. So, we packed up and headed for the Bay side.
I reset and little Olivia got our first fish of the morning, a nice little kingie. She got the second too, a spot. Olivia was quite the fisherman. She worked the rod and knew when the fish were biting. Poor things never stood a chance.
Hank was the next to haul in a fish. Or, I should say, the next two. He got a double header, spot and silver perch. He was ecstatic! They missed a few fish after, and crabs were an issue. I worked with Matt on getting his casting dialed in. He's got potential.
So, despite the tough start, things ended up quite well. The kids had a lot of fun. And so did I. After all, I do have the best job in the world. Lisa and our pug faced boys joined me on the beach for a little fun, and then we headed home for a delicious lunch from Yvette's. Couldn't have asked for a better day.
