Is there a difference between exhaustion and enjoyment? What a stupid question - of course there is. Is there a difference between what’s best for the horse and what the rider wants? Often it seems that way, unfortunately. However, if you do what is best for the horse, it will eventuate in what is best for you. Wouldn't you love to not have to lunge your horse to be able to ride it?
Short cuts never help improve systemic issues. Go back, lay better foundations, do more work from the ground, strengthen your communication and trust in each other, just hang out with your horse.
If you are afraid to get on your horse, then don't get on your horse. You don't have to ride today, and definitely not if it frightens you so much you think lunging the excess energy out is the answer. A tired horse might be quieter, but also is more prone to injury. If you want a quiet horse, chose a breed or temperament that is more suitable for you, or spend many hours, days, months, years solidifying the basic training.
I ride without lunging first because:
I trust my preparation
I trust my training
I trust my horse
PS: Yes, yes, I know the original pic is meant to be a joke.
PPS: Yes, yes, lunging is a valuable skill, but not in this context. Unfortunately, many horse people still think lunging a horse to "get the bucks out" is ok, and that's a serious problem.
