Kristall Gallerie 24/04/2026

Kristall Gallerie In Swakopmund, few places are visited as frequently by our family as the well-known landmark, the Kristall Galerie. This is partly thanks to my sister-in-law. A jeweller by trade, her mind perpetually scouts for new ideas and designs to incorporate into her gem cutting and silversmithing. Originally...

Recently, Alte Kalköfen Lodge made a decision that truly caught the attention of the tourism industry.

Instead of the usual annual rate increases, the owners took the unusual step of reducing their 2026–2027 rates for trade partners, a decision made possible by a strong 2025 season, disciplined management, and a belief that success should be shared with those who help create it. 👏 👏 👏

One tour operator responded with words that perfectly capture what many of us experience, but seldom say out loud:

“In all honesty, this is the first time in many years that we have seen a Namibian establishment take such a thoughtful and partner-minded step. It stands in complete contrast to the usual stream of explanations we receive when rates increase yet again.”

They went on to speak about something even more important than rates , the impression guests carry home after staying at Alte Kalköfen Lodge:

“Since the very first group stayed there many years ago, we have heard nothing but phenomenal praise , not only for the lodge, but especially for us as owners, our team, and our passion. Many of these guests return whenever they are in Namibia.”

The owners’ response to this message was humble and honest:

“𝐖𝐞 𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐨𝐮𝐫𝐚𝐠𝐞𝐝 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐬𝐨𝐦𝐞 𝐢𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐢𝐧𝐝𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐲 𝐬𝐞𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐩𝐨𝐬𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐢𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐛𝐞𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐝 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐬𝐦𝐚𝐥𝐥 𝐚𝐝𝐣𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭. 𝐖𝐞 𝐛𝐞𝐥𝐢𝐞𝐯𝐞 𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐥𝐨𝐝𝐠𝐞 𝐰𝐢𝐥𝐥 𝐛𝐞𝐧𝐞𝐟𝐢𝐭 𝐟𝐫𝐨𝐦 𝐢𝐭, 𝐛𝐮𝐭 𝐰𝐞 𝐚𝐥𝐬𝐨 𝐤𝐧𝐨𝐰 𝐢𝐭 𝐦𝐮𝐬𝐭 𝐛𝐞 𝐦𝐚𝐧𝐚𝐠𝐞𝐝 𝐜𝐚𝐫𝐞𝐟𝐮𝐥𝐥𝐲. 𝐎𝐮𝐫 𝐠𝐨𝐚𝐥 𝐫𝐞𝐦𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐬 𝐥𝐨𝐧𝐠-𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐦 𝐩𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐧𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐩𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐬𝐮𝐩𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐨𝐮𝐫𝐢𝐬𝐦 𝐭𝐨 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐬𝐨𝐮𝐭𝐡 𝐨𝐟 𝐍𝐚𝐦𝐢𝐛𝐢𝐚.”

This exchange highlights something important for our industry:

✅ Owner-managed lodges still set the standard
✅ Long-term partnerships matter
✅ Southern Namibia deserves stronger itinerary focus
✅ Authentic hospitality leaves lasting impressions

Sometimes leadership in tourism is not shown through expansion or marketing campaigns , but through quiet, thoughtful decisions that strengthen relationships.

The hidden life of the Namib Desert 24/04/2026

The hidden life of the Namib Desert To the casual passerby, the desert can appear quiet and unassuming. Perhaps even barren. Yet beneath the surface of the Namib, entire ecosystems stir to life. Hidden deep within the pillowy, voluminous sand, small, swift creatures go about their secret lives. The desert’s tinier residents are ofte...

Conservation is about people. 🌍🤝

Meet Lorna Dax. Working with Save the Rhino Trust (SRT), Lorna is a vital force in protecting Namibia’s critically endangered desert-adapted black rhinos.

Inspired by her father’s legacy, Lorna’s work focuses on the "real impact" of conservation: building trust, supporting ranger welfare and creating opportunities for local communities. As part of IRF’s Rising Wildlife Leaders cohort, she is leading the way for the next generation of female conservationists.
