ABEOKUTA — The MKO Abiola Stadium in Kuto, Abeokuta, will provide the stage for an intriguing African club football encounter on Saturday when Nigeria's Shooting Stars Sports Club of Ibadan, popularly known as 3SC or the Oluyole Warriors, welcome Tunisian giants CS Sfaxien in the first leg of their CAF Confederation Cup first preliminary-round tie.
It promises to be an encounter steeped in history, pride and continental ambition, with both clubs carrying impressive records in African football and determined to take an important step towards the next round.
The tie will be decided over two legs, with the return fixture scheduled to take place in Tunisia on September 13. The aggregate winner will progress to the second preliminary round and continue its quest for a place in the group stage.
For Shooting Stars, continental football represents a return to a stage on which the club has enjoyed some of the finest moments in Nigerian football history.
The Oluyole Warriors were the first Nigerian club to win the African Cup Winners' Cup, achieving the feat in 1976 after defeating Cameroon's Tonnerre Yaoundé. Sixteen years later, they added another continental crown by winning the CAF Cup in 1992, defeating Uganda's Nakivubo Villa 3–0 on aggregate.
Their pedigree also includes two appearances in the final of Africa's premier club competition. Shooting Stars reached the African Champions Clubs Cup final in 1984 and again in 1996, although they narrowly missed out on the ultimate prize on both occasions.
Those achievements established 3SC as one of Nigeria's traditional continental heavyweights, and Saturday will be another oppourtunity for them to add more pedigree to their status.
