From Television To The World
Born and raised in Ungwan Yelwa, Kaduna State, Benjamin Frederick grew up in a town called Television, though originally from Enugu State. His journey began like that of many young boys with a simple dream to play football. But life in Kaduna wasn’t easy.
He worked tirelessly, saving money just to afford a pair of boots, and often stayed behind after regular training sessions to sharpen his skills. His dedication soon caught the eye of Super Eagles star Moses Simon, who signed him into his academy, Simoiben Football Academy at just 13 years old.
“HARD WORK MAY BE SILENT, BUT ONE DAY, THE WORLD HEARS YOUR NAME.”
Moses Simon took Benjamin Fredrick under his wing, becoming both a mentor and a guiding influence in his early career. During the Unity Preseason Tournament, Benjamin’s talent caught the attention of scouts who saw something special in the young defender.
Soon after, football scout Kola Daniel introduced him to National League side, ABS FC, presenting him to the club’s chairman, Alloy Chukwuemeka. Though Benjamin lacked league experience, Chukwuemeka trusted Daniel’s instincts and it paid off. In February 2022, Fredrick made his debut for ABS FC and earned the “Man of the Match” award in his very first game.
“WHEN PREPARATION MEETS OPPORTUNITY, GREATNESS IS BORN.”
After a standout spell with ABS FC, Benjamin Fredrick earned a move to Nasarawa United in the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) in October 2022. Though he made only six appearances for the club, his talent and composure quickly drew national attention, leading to a call-up to the Nigeria U-20 squad.
At just 17 years old, Fredrick represented Nigeria with pride on the global stage playing four matches at the U-20 World Cup and featuring in all six games as the team claimed bronze at the 2023 U-20 Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt. His consistency, maturity, and drive set him apart as one of Nigeria’s brightest young defenders.
“AGE DOESN’T DEFINE GREATNESS, DEDICATION DOES.”
After his impressive showing at the U-20 World Cup, English Premier League side Brentford took notice of Benjamin Fredrick’s talent and signed him on a one-year loan from Nigeria in August 2023, placing him with the Brentford B team.
He seized the opportunity with determination and focus, quickly proving his worth. His hard work paid off when he was voted Brentford’s U-21 “Players’ Player of the Season.” Recognizing his potential, the club made his move permanent in April 2024, offering him a four-year contract, a major step in his rising career.
“WHEN OPPORTUNITY KNOCKS, THE PREPARED TURN IT INTO DESTINY.”
Just 13 months after joining Brentford on a permanent deal, Benjamin Fredrick achieved another milestone making his senior debut for the Nigerian national team, the Super Eagles, in a friendly match against Jamaica. In a beautiful full-circle moment, he shared the pitch with his mentor, Moses Simon, the man who had first believed in him.
Since then, Fredrick has cemented his place in Nigeria’s defense, showing remarkable versatility by excelling both at centre-back and right-back. His calmness under pressure, precise passing, and intelligent positioning have earned him praise as one of the brightest defensive talents in African football. When you watch him play, you see not just the present but the future of Nigeria’s defense.
“SOME DREAMS COME FULL CIRCLE BUT THE TRULY GREAT ONES KEEP MOVING FORWARD.”
Benjamin Frederick's name is now on jerseys, but its true power isn't in the letters. It's in the story they spell out: Perseverance. Resilience. Faith.
His rise is a challenge to anyone who has ever been told 'it can't be done.' The next time you feel like giving up, remember the boy who saw a football not just as a game, but as a key to a future everyone said was locked.
He didn't just find the key; he built the door. Let his journey be the fuel for your own.
