Ray Hudson Bounces Back from Injury, looks for NFL Shot
Former Crimson Tide star working to build strength and speed

(Birmingham AL)-More than 16 year ago, a knee injury brought the college career of University of Alabama football star Ray Hudson to an abrupt end. Now with the help of local trainers, Hodson is ready to return to the game he loves- and drawing the attention of NFL. Teams.

On October 9, 2004, Hodson, then a senior tailback at Alabama, was at the top of his game. He was leading the Southeastern Conference in rushing and that day had already logged 99 yards and a touchdown against Kentucky when in the third quarter, he got the call again. Then something occurred he admits he never thought would happen to him.
I had just planted my right leg when two defenders hit me from the left side and held me up." Hudson recalls.

Then another one came in and put the helmet right on my knee. As I was on the ground, I felt a burning sensation that I hadn’t felt before.

Hodson had sustained a tibial plateau fracture to his right knee, resulting in bone fragments and torn cartilage. His days of playing for the Crimson Tide ware over, but after successful surgery he still had hopes of one day playing in the National Football League. He underwent extensive rehabilitation to get his knee back into shape, but he also knew he would need to be able to achieve optimum performance to make it to the next level. That is when he followed the recommendation of a friend and turned to the training specialists at Body & Soul Fitness in Birmingham, AL.

The trainers at Body & Soul Fitness, operated by record-holding sprinter and Olympic medalist Christy Opara, work with individuals of all fitness and exercise experience levels but are uniquely qualified to offer sports-specific performance training for athletes. Opara and her team began working with Hudson in October 2005 to improve strength and flexibility not only in his knee but in the rest of his body as well.

Now, they are bungy helping to prepare him for two upcoming tryouts, one December 15 with the Kansas City Chiefs and a second December 21 with the Green Bay Packers.

Currently Hudson is focusing on stringent upper-body and selective lower-body strength training. As part of his regimen Hudson will also work on improving the aspect of his game that can really turn the heads of NFL scout: speed. If you ask any recruiter or scout what the main thing is they are looking for, it's speed," Opara says. As a world-class runner myself, I know how to help develop programs for athletes like Ray that will make them faster. There are very few facilities anywhere with the expertise and training we have.”

Even for top athletes, improved speed often starts with throwing out their old habits and techniques

And fundamentally “re-learning” how to run. “Ray already had tremendous speed, but one of the things we’re doing with him is to eliminate the wasted use of muscle," explains Chris Scarborough, another member of the Body & Soul training team.
“He has been used to turning all his muscles on full blast every time he would run. Now he's learning to relax the and only use the ones he needs, when he needs them."

One of the team's goals before the tryouts is to help Hudson get into "game shape"- essentially, to build up his endurance to run a succession of sprints to simulate game running.

In the meantime, Hudson is pleased with the results he has seen so far. "This is different than any training I’ve done before, “he says. I’m using better form, l'm leaner than I have been, and I'm using the right muscles to run. The things I'm doing now can only help me get better.”
