Gerrard to decide international future after World Cup

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers expects the 33-year-old England midfielder to make a decision on his future with the Three Lions after this summer's tournament in Brazil

But a strong Premier League campaign as a deep-lying midfielder may yet prolong Gerrard's career at both club and international level.Gerrard, who turns 34 on May 30, could finish his England career after leading his nation at Brazil 2014.

And Rodgers believes discussions about Gerrard's England future can wait until after the showpiece event in June and July.

"He's coped really well with balancing both (club and international commitments). That will be a decision purely for him," Rodgers said.

"He keeps himself fit – every player at Liverpool has an individual plan – but what will be will be after the World Cup.

"He goes there in great form, and I am sure he will perform really well. If he ever asked my advice, I will always be there to give my opinion.

"But there will be no decision made now, and we will see what happens after the World Cup."

Rodgers insists it was always his intention to move Gerrard into a deeper role, and that it was only a question of timing the switch right.

"I sat with Steven when I first came in, two years ago. And I said that this was my vision for him prolonging his career. I felt he had the real quality to play in that role," Rodgers added.

"He goes into the World Cup in great form, and he will be strong next year as well I am sure."

Sir Alex Ferg won't be a problem for me: Van Gaal

Manchester United boss Louis van Gaal does not believe the presence of Sir Alex Ferguson at the club will negatively influence his Old Trafford reign.

Questions were raised over the former United manager's continued involvement at the club during David Moyes's unsuccessful spell in charge.

But the current Netherlands coach is sure he will not face the same problems, claiming he is his own biggest critic.

“I don’t think he (Ferguson) is the biggest problem,” Van Gaal said. “I put more pressure on myself than others do.

“I’ll undoubtedly have a drink with Ferguson. We’ve done that before and we like each other.

“But nobody can put more pressure on myself than I do, so I do not expect any problem with Ferguson.”

The Dutchman also insisted he will be in charge of identifying transfer targets this summer, but will not play a role in negotiations to sign players.

Van Gaal added: “I say which players I want and which players can leave. But they (United) have to negotiate. I’ve never interfered with transfers.”

Luis Enrique perfect for Barcelona, says Zubizarreta

Barcelona sporting director Andoni Zubizarreta believes Luis Enrique is the perfect coach for the Catalans after their disappointing 2013-14 campaign.

The Camp Nou side announced on Monday that the former Celta de Vigo boss would replace Gerardo Martino following the Argentine's exit after just one season in charge and Zubizarreta has little doubt that Luis Enrique will prove to be the right choice.

"Luis Enrique is one of those people who dare to take on difficult challenges. This is not a challenge for Luis Enrique, but a challenge for Barcelona. He knows our way of playing, he knows our style. He is totally prepared to coach Barcelona," Zubizarreta said at a press conference.

"He is someone who knows how we work, the youth teams, Barca B ... He probably knows all that better than me. We are in the best possible hands."

Robin Van Persie returns training

Manchester United striker Robin van Persie has returned to training and took part in Ryan Giggs's first session as caretaker boss.

The Netherlands international picked up a knee injury in United's 1-1 draw with Bayern Munich at Old Trafford in the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final clash.

But Van Persie has returned to training ahead of schedule - and appeared delighted as he chatted with Giggs - and the club are optimistic that he could have some involvement before the season is over.

The Dutchman had returned to his homeland to recuperate, though made several trips back to Carrington for various check-ups.

And on Friday, just days after David Moyes was sacked by the club, he took part in his first full training session since picking up the injury at the start of April.

Van Persie had clashed with the axed Scot over his training methods and was unhappy with the greater emphasis placed on running and endurance in sessions.

The 30-year-old was worried he was being over-trained, which could make him more susceptible to injury.

Van Persie's season has been hampered by injury throughout, only making 18 appearances in the Premier League and completing 90 minutes on just 10 occasions – though he still managed to net 11 league goals.

CR7 reminds me of Eusebio - Pele

Pele says that Real Madrid superstar Cristiano Ronaldo reminds him of fellow all-time attacking great Eusebio, who passed away earlier in 2014.

The 29-year-old Ballon d'Or holder was named as one of Time's 100 most influential people on the planet - one of only five athletes to be named in the prestigious list - alongside the likes of Pope Francis, singer Beyonce and American political whistle-blower Edward Snowden.

Pele championed Ronaldo for the nomination and admitted he wished he could have played alongside Ronaldo but teased that, regardless of his fondness for the forward, he still wants Portugal to finish behind Brazil at this summer's World Cup.

"Cristiano Ronaldo is one of the most influential athletes in sports today," he told Time. "I greatly respect his competitive mindset on the field, and it’s no surprise that he is currently considered the best football player in the world.

"I had the opportunity to share his joy on stage at this year’s Ballon d'Or ceremony in Zurich. Cristiano never ceases to give his best for his national team.

"He reminds me a bit of my late friend and Portuguese legend Eusebio. They have the same elegance and creativity.

"Back when I played, I would have loved having a team-mate like Cristiano to play with up front. I would like to encourage him to keep up the hard work and to continue to fuel the passion for the sport among today’s youth.

Tito Vilanova died at age 45

The ex-central midfielder was admitted to hospital on Thursday following a downturn in his health which required an operation on his stomach on Thursday, with club president Josep Maria Bartomeu confirming the trainer was "fighting" for his life.

However, Vilanova, whose post-playing career has been tragically plagued by cancer, was unable to battle any longer and passed away on Friday afternoon.

Vilanova's public health problems began during his final season as Pep Guardiola's assistant when he was diagnosed with cancer of the parotid gland.

He took over from his long-time friend for the 2012-13 season but suffered a relapse just six months into his tenure as head coach.

He underwent surgery in December 2012, with Jordi Roura taking his place on the bench while he recovered in New York, before returning in March 2013 to see out the rest of the reason and guide Barca to La Liga victory.

Vilanova has largely - and understandably - been out of the spotlight since he left his position at Camp Nou but rumours of his ill health have sadly been revealed to be true. He is survived by a wife and two children.

Following confirmation of his death, Barcelona president Bartomeu said in a statement: "Tito will be reference as a man and in terms of football for Barcelona forever. We thank him for everything he taught us. Rest in peace."

The Catalans, whom he worked under for years before being promoted from within to head coach in 2012, also sent their condolences to the family of Vilanova.

"The club wishes to express its most heartfelt sympathy to his family, who are being joined in these moments of mourning by Barcelona members and fans all around the world, as well as the rest of the footballing and sporting world.

"The Vilanova family has asked for respect for their desire for the strictest intimacy in the moments after his death."

It'll be Awsome to stop Arsenal winning anything:Huddlestone

Former Tottenham midfielder Tom Huddlestone admits he will relish trying to stop Arsenal winning silverware again when Hull face the Gunners in the FA Cup final.

The north London side are trophyless since 2005, with Birmingham beating them in the Capital One Cup final in 2011 in their only other final berth in nine years.

"It would be nice to stop Arsenal winning anything again," he told reporters. "It'll be difficult, but it's a cup final and it's probably best to be an underdog.

But Huddlestone, who left White Hart Lane last summer, is confident in the Tigers' ability to shock the "big boys" having tasted victory against league leaders Liverpool earlier in the season.

"We've shown against the big boys in the league that we can match them. Liverpool are flying high at the top of the league and we beat them, so hopefully with Arsenal we can do the same."

Huddlestone hailed the impact of manager Steve Bruce after the club reached their first ever FA Cup final, and revealed that pre-season aims were solely to avoid relegation.

We will win FA Cup & get fourth:Wenger

Gunners boss was relieved to reach the Wembley final, which he believes his side can win, as well as overhauling fourth-place Everton in the hunt for Champions League football
Arsene Wenger feels Arsenal can claim a top four spot ahead of Everton and win the FA Cup as he analysed the final fixtures of the 2013-14 season.

The Gunners sealed a spot in the Wembley final where they will face Steve Bruce's Hull City following a penalty shootout victory over Wigan on Saturday and currently trail the Toffees by two points as the quest for Champions League football intensifies.

Wenger said: "Our fans were fantastic on Saturday even when it was bad. We want them to be behind the team... I'm sure they will.

"We can finish well this season. We can finish in the top four, we can win the FA Cup so it's down to how united we'll be until the end of the season and focused together."

i'll keep my word about Barcelona exit:Puyol

The veteran defender, 36, recently announced he will leave Camp Nou this summer, but a number of reports suggested he could stay on for an additional season now that Barcelona will not be allowed to sign a replacement following Fifa's decision to hand the Catalans a transfer ban for the next two windows.

Nevertheless, Puyol feels he is no longer at the required level to help Barcelona and has stressed that staying put is not an option.

"I have not changed my mind about leaving at the end of the season," Puyol stated at a press conference.

"I would stay if I could help, but it is difficult to get back to my best. I could not accept another year like this one.

"I cannot say anything else about my future because I have not made a decision yet. We will see how the season ends."

The centre-back then went on to defend Lionel Messi against recent criticism as he feels there is no reason to doubt the Argentina international.

"If there's one player who should not be doubted, it's Messi. He has given us so much and we can never rule him out.

"He always gives his all. Sometimes things work out and sometimes they don't. We have gotten accustomed to his incredibly high level, so when he doesn't score people start questioning him.

"But we are all very grateful to him for what he has done for the team. We are a team and we cannot blame everything on one player."

Arsenal 'disappointed' with 49,000 tickets FA cup final allocation

The Gunners received 49,000 tickets for the semi-final against Wigan on Saturday after their Championship opponents returned a portion of their allocation but Arsenal have been told by the FA that themselves and Hull will be afforded just 25,000 tickets each for the May 17 showpiece.

A statement on the official club website saw Gazidis state: “We are disappointed many of our supporters and also those of Hull City will be unable to get tickets to the cup final.

"We fully understand this is the showpiece FA fixture to celebrate the game as a whole, but we also believe the loyal supporters of the competing teams deserve a greater chance to see their team play in what is one of the biggest matches of the season. The balance in the FA’s allocation system is not right.

“Arsenal have approximately 45,000 season ticket holders and 150,000 members, many of whom come to games.

"They all give us their loyal support throughout a season but with the FA Cup final allocation at 25,000 there will be many disappointed Arsenal fans, who have supported the Club home and away for years, who will be unable to get a ticket to this historic match.”

Ancelotti backs Zidane to be a "sucessful manager"

Zidane is currently employed as Ancelotti’s assistant at Madrid and the former AC Milan coach has outlined his importance in the dressing room.

The Italian coach has backed his current assistant to make the step up and revealed he already has the respect of the Blancos players

Asked whether Zidane speaks to the players more than he does, Ancelotti replied: "Individually yes, because he knows them better. I don't talk to them much.

"For example, I think that to talk a lot to those who don't play a lot doesn't make sense. A coach I had always said to me: "Carlo, you're very important", but never picked me.

"If you speak a lot to players, they lose respect for you. Zizou does it well. When he talks, they listen. They respect him."

Former France and Madrid midfielder Zidane has recently been linked with the managerial posts at Monaco and Marseille and Ancelotti believes that, if he decides one day to make the step up from being an assistant, he will thrive.
