Why is the breaststroke kick called the “frog kick”?

Simple: look at how a frog swims.

The legs bend, turn outward, push the water backwards, then snap back together. That same movement is what you see in the breaststroke kick.

So when your coach says, “Give me a frog kick,” they’re not just making up a funny name. There’s actually a reason behind it.

Swimpro is bringing a 4-Day Swimming Bootcamp to Port Harcourt.

Whether you’re a complete beginner, looking to improve your strokes, or simply want to become more confident in the water, this bootcamp is designed to help you make real progress.

What to expect:
• Professional swimming instruction
• Beginner to advanced training
• Stroke technique and correction
• Water confidence and safety
• Small, focused training sessions

A 2024 study conducted in metropolitan Lagos found that 71.7% of respondents surveyed said they could not swim

That’s not a national statistic, but it highlights a bigger issue: swimming is still not treated as a basic life skill by enough people.

Nigeria has extensive coastlines, lagoons, rivers, pools and waterways.

Learning to swim isn’t just about sport or fitness.

It’s about water safety. It’s a life skill.

Can everyone float?

Not exactly.

Most people have some natural buoyancy, but how easily you float depends on your body composition, lung volume, body position, breathing and how relaxed you are in the water.

If you’re tense, lifting your head or fighting the water, floating can become much harder.

So if you struggle to float, don’t immediately assume you “can’t float.”

You may simply need to learn how to position your body and relax in the water.

Learning to float is one of the foundations of learning to swim.

Save this and share it with someone who thinks they can’t float.
