Akwa Ibom commissions remodeled Uyo Sports Stadium
The Government of Akwa Ibom State on Wednesday, May 24, commissioned and re-open the remodeled Uyo Sports Stadium for sporting activities.
The stadium was shut down for renovations in 2021 and is now officially opened for use by the Udom Emmanuel led-administration.
Speaking at the commissioning, Akwa Ibom State Governor, Mr Udom Emmanuel said the stadium will provide an enabling environment for athletes in the state to thrive.
Governor Emmanuel emphasized the need to nurture and support local talent, comparing them to renowned football stars like Erling Haaland, Lionel Messi, Gabriel Jesus, and Samuel Chukwueze.
He envisioned a future where a significant percentage of national team members would be Akwa Ibomites, thanks to the state's commitment to providing exceptional sporting infrastructure.
“Let me stand here and thank the people who support me, who walk with me and interpret my vision in youth and sports development. Today, I stand tall, I stand proud to say that this is one of the areas we’ve left a lot of legacies.
“People don’t know the difference between Haaland and others. We have so many Haalands here, but the problem is the facilities. Today, we are rising up to the occasion that we can produce so many Lionel Messi, so many Haalands, Gabriel Jesus’ and Samuel Chukwueze.
“Today, we are at this vision again, you know we are going somewhere. When we started, we said that it will get to a time where every national team, minimum of 40 to 50 percent of those that will be in the national camp will be Akwa Ibomites. Because we are providing the best facilities for our people to excel.
“If our teams go to a competition and they have to play on a synthetic pitch, they won’t be found wanting because they have one of the best synthetic pitches in Nigeria, which is what you are seeing in this stadium and also in Eket Stadium.
“We are trying to bring in people from all the three Senatorial Districts to harness their talents and expose them. That is why you see us building these facilities in Eket, Uyo and in Ikot Ekpene, so that people can easily be identified, encouraged and can easily be supported.
“The only place in Nigeria you can find an Olympic size swimming pool is in Akwa Ibom. I don’t know what will happen tomorrow. That is why a lot of people are saying they want to make Uyo a sports hub because we pay attention to building infrastructures and also maintain them.
“Akwa Ibom is the only State in Nigeria that can host four international competitions simultaneously. The handlers of sports in Nigeria should see this and consider Akwa Ibom State as a venue for the next sports festival.”
The remodeled stadium, initiated by the Akwa Ibom State Government and supervised by the Ministry of Youth and Sports Development, has a 15,000-seater capacity, and will play home to Dakkada FC.
The Commissioner in charge of the ministry, Sir Monday Uko expressed his gratitude to Governor Emmanuel for his unwavering support in completing the project.
He commended the governor's commitment to fulfilling his vision and recognized the significance of the stadium, which serves as a vital venue for government events.
“Today, we have done it again. It is one thing to be a very good commissioner, but it is another thing to have a governor who supports you to interpret his vision. I want to thank the Governor for always supporting me to fulfill this dream.
“This is one of the busiest stadiums in this state. This is a government venue, this is where events of government used to be held, but somewhere along the line, it couldn’t be so again and you woke up one morning and called on me, that you cannot leave the Uyo Township Stadium without commissioning it. Be it on the 29th of May, I will do so.”
Also speaking, the Executive Chairman of Uyo Local Government Area, Dr. Uwemedimo Udo joined voices with well-wishers to thank the governor for renovating the stadium.
He acknowledged the governor's dedication in transforming the abandoned sports infrastructure into a remarkable facility that uplifts the pride of Uyo Local Government and the entire Akwa Ibom State.
“Your Excellency, I want to thank you and express the best wishes and sentiments of the people of Uyo Local Government for this wonderful work you have done in Uyo Local Government and Akwa Ibom State.
“You have elevated the status of this abandoned and forgotten piece of sports infrastructure and we are very happy and delighted. The people of Uyo celebrate you today because of this wonderful and superior performance that you have put on the sands of Uyo local government,” he said.
The stadium is the fourth sporting facility alongside the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium, Eket Sports Stadium, and Ikot Ekpene Stadium.
