One thing that discourages many beginners is the belief that nobody will give them an opportunity because they have no experience.
But let me tell you something: you can start building evidence of what you know before your first paid job.
Here are seven ways to begin.
1. Create sample social media content. Choose a business and develop a few relevant posts to demonstrate your ideas.
2. Practise copywriting. Rewrite a product description or create a sample advert that communicates the product's value clearly.
3. Design sample graphics. Use Canva to demonstrate your ability to create clean, useful marketing materials.
4. Edit short videos. Create sample promotional videos that show your editing skills.
5. Study real businesses. Identify gaps in their online presence and think about how you could help them improve.
6. Build a small portfolio. Keep your best samples in one place so potential clients can see what you can do. Clearly label practice projects as samples.
7. Learn how to present your offer. Practise explaining the problem you solve, the service you provide and the value a business could receive.
Notice what you're doing here.
You're not waiting for somebody to give you experience before you start practising. You're building practical evidence of your ability.
Of course, sample work doesn't guarantee a client, but it gives you something more useful to show than simply saying, “I have the skill.”
Don't let a lack of experience stop you from taking the first practical step.
