It took missing this opportunity to understand this lesson when it comes to Importation.

I assumed since they ship, they can ship anything naw🥲 only to learn the hard way.

One major thing to find out while choosing your shipping agent is to ask what they can and cannot ship to your country.

Some shipping agents don't ship battery goods, skincare products, cream etc so ask even before you start negotiating with suppliers.

This has been in my drafts since February.

I remember it was in one of the Becoming an author's session with years ago and one of the things she mentioned was THE AUDIENCE OF ONE. Sometimes, what you do/offer is for One person!!!!!

I can write a book, fine, it gets to a lot of people but it might be for just one person!!!!

Though it was in a book writing context, I saw it more than that! Thank you mama 🙏❤️

Oh that stood with me for years, seeing how that applies to other areas as well.

E.g
You're a make a post that gets just 5likes and you want to be depressed😅😅 but the thing is people are watching that you dont even know!!!

I've had suppliers reach out to me saying I saw your post and I'm like 😳 YOU SAY? but I didnt see the likes😅, the views might even be just 10 but just know people are watching.

This has helped me and I hope it helps you too😉

Picking the right country to import from matters more than you think.

Here are 5 key things to note before making that decision:

✅ Product availability – Not every country is strong in every product. For clothing, for instance, China, Turkey, and Bangladesh are popular hubs.

✅ Your niche – Beyond just the product, know the specifics. Bangladesh is strong in jeans, T-shirts, and kids’ wear, while China and Turkey are better options for adult gowns.

✅ Exchange rate – This directly impacts your landing cost and profit margin.

✅ Logistics & shipping – Consider how fast, reliable, and affordable it is to get goods delivered to Nigeria.

✅ Market demand – Don’t just import because it’s cheap. Make sure people actually want what you’re bringing in.

This has been the major concerns of many who want to go into importation asking ma 'Why is the cost for shipping more than the cost for buying products itself?🤧😭

And here is my answer👇

Shipping fee is calculated in dollars, and especially you're in Nigeria, you'd know that the price depends on our exchange rate (not official rate o👀, we have addressed that severally).

The higher the exchange rate, the higher you pay as shipping but this is what you can do:

1. Be calculative and select your shipping method wisely. Use sea shipping if you can wait, you pay way less than if its air shipping you use. Emphasis on if you can wait tho.

2. If you're into preorder, make sure to do your calculations veryyyy well.

3. If you do your calculations and see it is higher than usual, probably get a wholesaler who import in containers in your country for a start.

All these are very important and is why you need the right knowledge and guide if you're starting importation.
