Chelsea were beaten agonisingly in the Carabao Cup final after a late Virgil van Dijk header won it for Liverpool in extra-time.
Raheem Sterling thought he had given Chelsea the lead in the first-half when he tapped in at the far post. Nicolas Jackson, however, was adjudged to be offside in the build-up and the goal was disallowed after a lengthy VAR check.
It was a similar situation on the hour-mark. Van Dijk headed the ball past Djordje Petrovic and it looked for all of the world that Liverpool had taken the lead. The referee, though, was sent over to the pitchside monitor and chose to disallow the goal because of an offside.

Conor Gallagher reveals players were tired in Chelseaβs 1-1 draw with Manchester City
Conor Gallagher was content with the way the lads fought with Manchester City in a 1-1 draw at Etihad Stadium on Saturday evening. However, the midfielder was convinced Cheslea could have won the game had they not missed some excellent chances.
A goal from Raheem Sterling for the Blues saw the West Londoners break the deadlock before half-time. Chelseaβs imposing defence avoided any dangers and restricted City players from getting a look at the ball inside the box.
However, the hosts eventually broke through the Blues defence when a shot from Rodri beat Dorde Petrovic after deflecting off Trevoh Chalobah
But Gallagher later commented that his side were a bit tired after playing two games in a week. And after the final whistle, the midfielder spoke to BBC and said:
βReally hard. I feel that the lads were brilliant, and defensively, we were very focused. We were very tired, but we saw it through, and we are happy with the performance.β
