As I made my way back home from the mid-day mass and stations of the cross yesterday, I noticed my neighbour scolding three young boys who appeared to be around 9 to 10 years old. Upon approaching him, I discovered that they had been caught red-handed cutting a bunch of plantains from his yard.

These boys were not residents of our estate but had come from another area, armed with knives and a bag to harvest the plantains. They had even filled the bag with the stolen produce. Though I am hesitant to use the term "stolen," it was clear that they had no permission to take the plantains.

My neighbour confiscated their knives and slippers and sent them to locate their mothers. An elderly woman from their area was present and pleaded on their behalf.

It was disheartening to learn that we had been experiencing a series of plantain thefts, and initially, we had assumed that the culprit was an adult from within our estate. However, it appeared that these children had been sneaking into our neighbourhood to harvest plantains that they had not planted.

I couldn't help but feel anxious and concerned about the future of our youth. These children were left at home while their parents went out to work and provide for their families. It's troubling to think that they resorted to such acts at such a young age.

After being reprimanded, the boys collected their knives and slippers and left the scene.

❇PROTECT YOUR SKIN THIS SEASON

▶️ Our skin is the largest organ in our body. It is made up of two layers, the EPIDERMIS and DERMIS. The Epidermis is the upper dead layer that contains cells that produce melanin, which gives our skin its color.

▶️ The functions of the skin are; Protection, Sensation, Heat regulation, Control of evaporation, Aesthetics and communication, Storage and synthesis, Excretion, Absorption, and Water resistance.

✅ HERE HOW TO TAKE CARE OF YOUR SKIN THIS SEASON

1. STAY HYDRATED: Drinking water frequently during the period cannot be over-emphasised the weather is so hot, coupled with the dry and dusted wind. Aim for about 2-3 litres a day.

Keepin mind that, staying hydrated does not include Caffeine intake, because it is a diuretic and diuretics eliminate fluid out of the body, so you may need to cut back on the coffee this period. Also eat lots of fruits and vegetables to keep your skin glowing.

2. MOISTURIZE: Remember to move around with lip balms to avoid having a cracked lips.

Go for moisturizing creams and soaps to keep your skin and face especially moisturized during this season. We know how fast water dries off surfaces during this season. Hence it is more advisable to moisturize right in the bathroom while your body is still moist because a few steps out of the bathroom door dries you up completely.

3. EXFOLIATE: This will help shave off dead and dry skin cells and allow new skin cells to come up.

Use a gentle body scrub twice a week.

4. BATHE WITH LUKEWARM WATER: Yes, we know that the mornings are really cold and having a shower with cold water isn’t an option; however, hot water isn’t also an advisable option for you as it strips the skin of its natural oil barrier, thus resulting in dryness and itching. Hence, opt for lukewarm water.
Skin care experts recommend short, warm showers or baths that last no longer than 5 to 10 minutes.

5. EAT HEALTHY FATS: Not all types of fat are bad for you. There are healthy fats you can consume without the fear of excess cholesterol and also can be heart-healthy. Healthy fats give you energy. You can get healthy fat from polyunsaturated fats such as in nuts, seeds, vegetable oils such as corn and safflower oil, and fatty fish. Avocados are also a great source of healthy fats.

➡️ Family is indeed a health-support system. The various functions of the family; reproduction, production, nutrition, education, etc. Open the door to health activities that, in turn, improve the well-being of family members.

👉Your family health history is important to your health!

✔️Families can share many things that can increase your risk of getting a health condition, including:

📍Genes
📍Lifestyle habits (for example, poor diet, lack of exercise, excessive alcohol consumption, and smoking).

🔸Many health conditions develop due to a combination of factors including lifestyle choices and environmental factors, such as sun exposure. This means that in most cases family history alone is not enough to cause a condition to develop.

🎯Knowing that some conditions such as heart disease, stroke, diabetes, and some cancers tend to ‘run in the family’ can be a sign you are at increased risk.
