*CR7* -Ronaldo always filling the shirt No.7? For how long has he been wearing it?

- BY FuadOluwaniyi

The Portuguese superstar has long been associated with the iconic No.7 for both club and country, let's takes a look at the origins of that choice

Cristano Ronaldo has become synonymous with the iconic No.7 shirt, first wearing the number in his Manchester United days and continuing the tradition during his time at Real Madrid and, now, Juventus.

The Portuguese superstar – also known as CR7 – has turned his name and digit into an international brand, and it's hard to remember that he was ever associated with another number.

Why does Ronaldo wear No.7?

Ronaldo has long been associated with the number 7, which has also helped him create the global brand of 'CR7'.

Though the Portuguese striker has become synonymous with the number, it wasn't his favoured shirt of choice until he arrived at Manchester United.

He wore the No.28 during his time at Sporting and it was only when he signed for the Red Devils in 2004, when then-manager Sir Alex Ferguson convinced him to take the iconic shirt due to his belief that Ronaldo would be able to reach the same heights as those who had previously worn the number, that a new era was opened.

The striker arrived at Old Trafford asking to wear his favoured choice of 28, but Ferguson talked him into taking the seven jersey that was worn by such greats as David Beckham, George Best and Eric Cantona.

Sure enough, Ronaldo set the Premier League on fire, ravaging opposition defences, and it was in England where he won his first Ballon d'Or award in 2008 after scoring 42 goals in a single season.

When he moved to Real Madrid in 2009, he wore No.9 until the No.7 shirt was vacated by the legendary Raul who left to play for Schalke.

Since then, Ronaldo's No.7 shirt has become iconic, and the striker even took the number from Juan Cuadrado following his switch to Juventus earlier on in the summer. Cuadrado now wears No.16.

He has also worn the No.7 shirt on Portugal national team duty, first wearing the No.17 when playing alongside the legendary Figo in the 2004 European Championships.

After Figo retired, however, Ronaldo once again claimed the talismanic No.7.

Football aside, the number 7 has long been associated with luck and fortune.

SparksurfsportNews:- La Liga's 'United States game' causing havoc in Spain as Barca desperate to push brand

Sparksurf / Fuad Oluwaniyi

The Spanish League's plan to jump in front of the Premier League and play one of their games in the United States this season still has some way to go in winning over players, clubs and supporters.

News that La Liga has signed an agreement with sports and entertainment group Relevent to promote football in North America was announced last week. The suggestion that the deal includes plans to play a game abroad felt like a bold statement of intent from president Javier Tebas.

Relevent is behind the International Champions Cup, the world's largest summer club tournament, and its founder Stephen Ross is also the owner of Miami Dolphins. A La Liga match this season in Miami was implied if not written in stone in the announcement.

The Premier League has long held the desire to stage a 39th game of the season on foreign soil. Had La Liga jumped ahead in terms of planning? The reaction suggests there is still some way to go before the idea can be executed.

The biggest hurdle will be gaining permission from Spain's football association, who say they were not consulted ahead of the announcement last week.

They will also need permission from Spain's Foreign Office and its Ministry for Sport. And they need to win over the supporters of the clubs involved in the game.

There was a furious reaction to the decision to play the Spanish Super Cup in Morocco two weeks ago and a league match would be even more problematic as supporters' season tickets would need to be reimbursed.

Diario AS have calculated that were Real Madrid to be the club playing the US fixture that could end up costing the league around €3million, on the basis of around 62,000 season-ticket holders, paying €1,000 for their season ticket at 52 euros per game and all wanting their money back.

Real Madrid appear cold on the idea and say they have not been consulted. Barcelona president Josep Maria Bartomeu is very much in favour of pushing the club in the United States, and the Catalan derby between Barca and Girona in January has been put forward as a possible fixture.

But the game, a home match for Girona, is wedged between cup quarter-finals and would be difficult if both sides are still in the competition.

The players' union has also rejected the idea. 'Footballers are not bargaining chips that can be used to benefit third parties,' it said.

Long-haul flights in crucial weeks of the campaign will be rejected by players and coaches no matter how much presidents push.

The feeling in Spain is that the idea might appeal to smaller clubs desperate for a commercial fillip but a match between two of the competition's minnows would not make for a financial success.

The Spanish league is certainly taking the fight to win global fans to the Premier League but Tebas' ambitious plans has many bridges to cross before he gets it across the pond.

Leo Messi: The legend continues

Sparksurf / Fuad Oluwaniyi

Years pass by for people and they get older but Lionel Messi gives the sensation that he has not been affected as aside from not having quite as much pace as his early years he has been able to compensate that with more intelligent play.

Another season and the Argentine continues to be the central figure at Barcelona, he organises play, provides assists and of course scores goals. He is the first player that has scored in 15 consecutive championships in the 21st century.

It was nine years since it was he who broke the 5,000 goal barrier for Barcelona in the Primera and yesterday he got the 6,000th with record books full of statistics from the Rosario born player.

Against Alaves he got the opening goal with a free-kick that he put underneath the wall and after Coutinho added to the scoring, it was Messi again to take the total to 6,002 with 385 coming from the player.

It means that 6.5% of the goals by Barcelona in their history have been scored by the 31 year old.

Saturday's gossip: Neymar 'targeted by Real Madrid in £269m move on one condition'

Sparksurf / Fuadoluwaniyi

Florentino Perez is preparing a €300m (£269m) bid for Neymar after Real Madrid's defeat to Atletico Madrid in the UEFA Super Cup.

Los Blancos lost Cristiano Ronaldo to Juventus this summer and has so far failed to replace the Portuguese.

Paris Saint-Germain would be reluctant to even entertain any offers, even those above the world record £200m they paid for the Brazilian.

But Sport believe the French side may incur a hefty penalty for breaching Financial Fair Play regulations.

And if that transpires, the Real president will be waiting with an enormous offer for the No.10.
