Similarities In Worship
Jesus prayed in ways that had similarities to Jewish prayer of his time, and some of those practices overlap with Islamic prayer. But it wasn’t identical to the 5 daily prayers Muslims do today.
1. Posture: Prostration
- Jesus: In Matthew 26:39 and Mark 14:35, Jesus is described as falling on his face/ground and praying in Gethsemane: “he fell on his face and prayed”. This is called _prostration_.
- Judaism: Jewish prayer historically included bowing and prostration. Psalm 95:6 says “come, let us bow down and kneel”.
- Islam: Prostration (_sujud_) is a core part of Muslim prayer 5 times daily.
- Overlap: Yes, prostration was practiced by Jesus, early Jews, and Muslims.
2. Washing/Cleansing before prayer
- Jesus/Jews: Jewish law required ritual washing of hands and feet before temple worship. Jesus and his disciples followed Jewish customs.
- Islam: _Wudu_ - washing face, hands, feet before prayer - is obligatory.
- Overlap: Ritual purification before prayer was common in 1st-century Judaism.
3. Direction of prayer
- Jesus: Prayed facing Jerusalem, like other Jews. Psalm 5:7, Daniel 6:10.
- Islam: Prayed toward Jerusalem initially, then toward Mecca after 624 CE.
- Overlap: Early practice was similar, but the direction later changed in Islam.
4. Structure and timing
- Jesus: Prayed at various times - morning, night, before meals, alone, in groups. He taught the Lord’s Prayer in Matthew 6:9-13, which is a spoken prayer, not a set of physical movements.
- Islam: Has 5 set prayers daily at specific times, with a fixed sequence of standing, bowing, prostrating, recitation, and supplication.
- Difference: Jesus didn’t establish a 5-times-daily structured prayer ritual with fixed Arabic recitations. His prayer was more flexible.
5. Language and content of Jesus Prayed in Aramaic/Hebrew. His prayers were spontaneous and in his own words, plus the Lord’s Prayer he taught disciples.
- Islam: Obligatory prayers are recited in Arabic with specific verses from the Qur’an.
Why the similarity exists:
Both Jesus and Muhammad came from Semitic traditions rooted in the Abrahamic line. Many practices - prostration, ritual washing, fasting, facing a holy site - were part of Near Eastern monotheistic worship before Islam. Islam sees itself as restoring the original practice of Abraham and earlier prophets, including Jesus.
Sources: Christian gospels, Jewish texts like the Mishnah, and Islamic hadith/qur’an all confirm prostration was a known form of worship in that region.
