Today, we do not just celebrate a birthday. We celebrate a life that has become a lifeline.
Happy Birthday, our President, our Coach, our Leader β *Coach Peter Favour Ahmedu!*
If you want to understand Coach Ahmedu, you must start from where it all began. Not on polished hardwood floors, but on the uneven grounds in the army barracks of Obalende in Lagos. Those rough grounds did not break him. They built him. They gave him grit. They gave him hunger. They gave him an unbreakable bond with his roots.
That boy from Ogwule went on to become one of the most decorated basketball minds Africa has ever produced.
For over two decades, you have been a masterclass in excellence. You made history with Nigeria's D'Tigress β the unforgettable three-peat that put Nigerian women's basketball on the world map. You answered the call of the Lionesses of Senegal and proved that true leadership knows no borders. You led us to the World Cup. You led us to the Olympics. You built dynasties at First Bank, Markmentors, ASPAC, and beyond. You showed the world what you have always believed, that "it is the same game be it men or women basketball."
The world knows you as a championship coach. We know you as something bigger.
We know you as the man who could have taken all the trophies, all the accolades, and settled into a comfortable life β but chose to come home and give back.
That choice is the A'S Ahmedu Foundation.
Your philosophy has always been clear: "a conscious and deliberate quest to institutionalize the culture of giving back to society." For you, it was never a slogan. It is daily work.
We saw it in Otukpo, when you sponsored not just a tournament, but made sure the technical officials β the often-forgotten backbone of the game β were taken care of through sponsorship to enhance their capacity at the Nigerian Institute for Sports in Lagos.
We saw it in Ogwule-Ugbokpo, when the "Agatu Pikin, Our Hope" clinic brought over 500 children together. You taught them layups and jump shots, yes, but more importantly, you taught them why they must stay in school and empowered them with educational and sports materials.
We saw it in Ogun State with the three-day handball clinic, and we remember the seed that started it all back in 2007 with the first "Stay-In-School-With-Basketball" Clinic in Lagos.
In a region that has known deep pain, displacement and loss, you have been more than a coach. You have been a lifeline to widows and orphans, offering not just basketballs, but skills training, school support, and tangible hope. You have always said your greatest happiness is not in personal luxury, but in discovering talent and nurturing it to greatness.
That is who you are.
You breathe basketball, but you live to serve your people.
From the courts of Atlanta to the villages of Agatu and the heartland of Otukpo, you have woven a legacy not of fame, but of purpose. You are a coach, a mentor, a philanthropist, and a visionary leader who reminds every Idoma child that where you come from does not limit where you can go.
Coach, on behalf of every child who has held a basketball because of you, every widow who has received support, every young coach you have mentored, every volunteer and staff of the A'S Ahmedu Foundation β we say thank you.
Thank you for refusing to forget your roots.
Thank you for turning success into service.
Thank you for building champions on and off the court.
On this special day, our prayer for you is simple: May God grant you long life, perfect health, and boundless energy to continue this incredible work. May your new age be filled with more wins β not just on the scoreboard, but in lives transformed.
You are not just coaching champions, Coach. You are building them. You are building us. And you are building the future of Idoma land.
We are proud to be your team.
Happy Birthday, President!
Peter Ahmedu
