PRESS STATEMENT:
Nigerian Professional Boxing Promoters Association (NPBPA)
The Nigerian Professional Boxing Promoters Association (NPBPA) finds it necessary to further draw the attention of the Federal Ministry of Sports Development, the National Sports Commission, and relevant international stakeholders to recent disturbing developments within the Nigerian boxing ecosystem.
We respectfully call for careful scrutiny of the track record, capacity, and legitimacy of individuals or groups behind the ongoing attempts to undermine the existing professional boxing regulatory structure in Nigeria.
It is deeply concerning that persons with little or no verifiable experience in professional boxing promotion, event organization, or active participation in the professional boxing industry are at the forefront of actions aimed at disrupting and potentially overriding the authority of the Nigerian Boxing Board of Control (NBBofC).
Professional boxing is a highly specialized industry that requires proven experience, financial responsibility, regulatory understanding, and long-term commitment. It is therefore inappropriate and counterproductive for individuals without such background to initiate actions capable of destabilizing the system that governs it.
We note with concern previous instances where the Board has been subjected to legal challenges and institutional pressure without sufficient consideration of the broader implications on the sport. Such actions, if left unchecked, risk setting a dangerous precedent that may embolden further disruptions targeted not only at the regulatory body but also at professional promoters and stakeholders.
The NPBPA emphasizes that professional boxing cannot and should not be subjected to arbitrary control, experimental governance structures, or unilateral actions lacking due process. Any reform, review, or improvement within the system must follow established legal frameworks, stakeholder consultation, and internationally accepted governance principles.
We also caution against any attempt to indirectly dominate or restructure professional boxing through non-transparent means, including the systematic capture of athletes, imposition of unfavorable contractual conditions, or the gradual displacement of established professional structures.
Such actions would not only undermine the rights of promoters and professional athletes but also damage Nigeria’s reputation within the global boxing community.
The Nigerian Professional Boxing Promoters Association therefore calls on:
The Federal Ministry of Sports Development
The National Sports Commission
International boxing stakeholders and record bodies
to critically evaluate the credibility, intentions, and qualifications of those advocating for structural changes outside the recognized framework of professional boxing governance.
We strongly reaffirm that the progress of professional boxing in Nigeria must be protected, guided by experience, regulated by proper authority, and advanced through collaboration—not conflict or destabilization.
This is a pivotal moment for the sport, and we urge all genuine stakeholders to act decisively in preserving the integrity, stability, and future of professional boxing in Nigeria.
Signed:
