Awolowo's Prophecy On His Way To Pr!son...and it came to pass

When he was about to be sent to jail on 11 September, 1963 for treasønable feløny and plotting to overthrow the Federal Government, Chief Obafemi Awolowo maintained his characteristic self.

Then, calmly till his pitch picked, he started by telling the presiding Judge, George Sodeinde Sowemimo, among other things, "It is an irony of history that as one of the architects of Nigeria's Independence, I have spent almost half of Nigeria's three years of Independence under one form of conf!nement or another... Naturally, Sir, in the course of such a long, turbulent, active political life I have attracted to myself a sizable crop of detractors as well as political adversaries... For some time to come the present twilight of democracy, individual freedom and the rule of law will fall into utter darkness... It is therefore with a brave heart, with confidence and hope, that I go from this twilight into darkness, unshaken in my faith in God that a glorious dawn will come tomorrow. My adversaries might say, who am I to say all these? What if I d!e? The point, of course, is that I am alive and will not d!e in prison..."

Awo did not d!e. He was released on the orders of General Gowon within 24 hours of the latter's taking over power after the fall of the late General Johnson Aguiyi-Ironsi. The decree releasing Awolowo and others ja!led with him was hastily drafted by Dr. Taslim, Elias, who gladly volunteered to do so even though he had been hunted out of office as Federal Attorney-General during the Ironsi regime.

The Chief of the Naval Staff of Nigeria, Vice Admiral Emmanuel Ikechukwu Ogalla, was appointed to this esteemed position by President Bola Tinubu on 19 June 2023 and served in this capacity until 30 October 2025. Emmanuel Ikechukwu Ogalla was born on 20 December 1968 in Enugu State, Southeast Nigeria. He holds a West African School Certificate from the Nigerian Military School, Zaria, obtained in 1987, as well as a BSc in mathematics and an MSc in strategic studies from the University of Ibadan.

Edith Agoye is a former Nigerian striker who became known for leaving school to chase a pro deal abroad in the 1990s.

1. Playing career

- Full name: Edith Olumide Alumeida Agoye
- Born: 19 Jan 1976
- Position: Centre-forward, 1.81m
- Club career: Journeyman who played across Africa and Europe:
- Nigeria: Shooting Stars SC, Enyimba, Julius Berger
- Tunisia: Espérance Tunis - won the Tunisian league 1998-2000
- Germany: Rot-Weiß Oberhausen in 2. Bundesliga
- Switzerland: FC Schaffhausen
- Austria: SV Braunau
- Israel: Bnei Sakhnin, Maccabi Herzliya
- Stats: 94 club appearances, 29 goals according to Transfermarkt

2. The “dumped education for a deal abroad” story
Agoye was a promising schoolboy player in Lagos with Shooting Stars. In the mid-90s he left the Uni to sign abroad - first to Switzerland with FC Schaffhausen in 1996.

That was pretty common at the time. Agents would pick up talented teens from Nigerian academies and school teams and get them trials in Europe. For a lot of players it was a gamble: quit school, take the shot at a contract, and hope it works out. Agoye made it work long enough to have a 13-year pro career across 7 countries.

3. After playing
He retired in 2009 and went into coaching:
- Manager: Shooting Stars SC 2017-2022
- Manager: Sunshine Stars 2022-2024
He’s currently out of a job as of 2024, but still active in Nigerian football circles.

Agoye is one of the classic examples of a Nigerian player who chose the foreign deal over finishing school in the 90s. It worked out for him - he played in Tunisia, Germany, Israel and won trophies.

Abiodun Baruwa – “Omo Alhaja”*, the goalkeeper who was the last line of defense for Shooting Stars when they nearly made history vs Zamalek in 1996.

His role in the 1996 CAF Champions League run

1. First-choice keeper
Baruwa was 3SC’s #1 throughout the 1996 African Cup of Champions Clubs campaign. He started both legs of the final against Zamalek.

2. The final itself
- 1st leg: 3SC beat Zamalek 2-1 Baruwa kept them in it with key saves.
- 2nd leg, Cairo: Zamalek won 2-1, forcing penalties. It went to 5-4 on penalties. Zamalek lifted their 4th title. cad2

That made 3SC the first Nigerian club to reach the final of the modern Champions League era. It’s still the closest they’ve come.

Why “Omo Alhaja”
“Omo Alhaja” means “Alhaja’s son” in Yoruba. Ibadan fans gave him that nickname. He said in an interviews that the hospitality of 3SC fans and officials like late Taiwo Ogunjobi revived his career when he joined from Stationery Stores.

Career after 3SC
- Club: Moved to Sion in Switzerland 1997, then Sturm Graz in Austria. He won the Welsh Premier League and Welsh Cup with Barry Town in 2002-03. Finished in English non-league before retiring.

- National team: Standby for the Dream Team that won gold at Atlanta 1996. Made the Super Eagles squad for France ’98 World Cup.

Legacy at Shooting Stars

Fans remember him as the keeper who gave 3SC belief in 1996. He’s still called “Omo Alhaja” by Oluyole Warriors supporters, and he’s said 3SC remains his “darling team”.

That 1996 side had Baruwa, Duke Udi, Ajibade Babalade, Patrick Pascal — a team that played with swagger.

W***y Okpara — the classic “club legend at home abroad, bit-part player for country” story.

The Orlando Pirates legend
1. 16 years, 374 games, 1 club
Okpara moved from ACB Lagos to Orlando Pirates in 1989 and became their #1 from 1990 to 2002. He’s still Pirates’ all-time appearance leader with 375 matches.

2. The 1995 CAF Champions League hero
He was in goal when Pirates beat ASEC Mimosas to win the 1995 African Champions League. That made him a Soweto icon. Pirates fans call him “Baba” and he’s worshipped for that era — the team that gave South Africa its first continental title.

3. Life after playing
Retired 2005, stayed at Pirates as goalkeeping coach. Younger keepers like Senzo Meyiwa and Thabang Radebe talk about how he mentored them. He’s basically Pirates royalty now.

Why he wasn’t a household name with the Super Eagles

1. Limited caps: 5 for Nigeria 1996-1998
He was behind Peter Rufai, Alloy Agu, and later Ike Shorunmu. Nigeria had depth in goal in the 90s.

2. The 1998 World Cup squad
He made the squad as 3rd choice keeper, but didn’t play. Rufai started.

3. Timing and perception
Okpara was based in South Africa when the Super Eagles were dominated by Europe-based players. Nigerian media and fans followed the Alloy Agu, Rufai/Shorunmu/Rufai generation more closely.

The contrast
*South Africa: “Okpara Williams” is a legend. Pirates fans still say they couldn’t let him down. He’s part of the club’s identity.

- Nigeria: Respected, but most fans know him as “that Pirates keeper who was in the 1998 squad”.

It’s why you’ll hear South Africans talk about him like he’s a Bucs legend, while back home he’s a footnote.

Duke Udi — “the bad boy” label stuck, but Shooting Stars fans still call him one of the most exciting players they’ve had.

Why he dazzled 3SC fans in the mid-90s

1. The player
- Position: Midfield/forward, born May 5 1976
- Style: Quick feet, tricky dribbling, fearless. He’d take on 2-3 defenders and wasn’t shy about going for goal himself.
- 1995 peak: Key part of the Shooting Stars squad that won the Nigeria Premier League in 1995. That team was dominant, and Udi’s flair made him a fan favorite at Lekan Salami Stadium.

2. The “bad boy”
Udi’s been open about it himself. Talent-wise he had everything, but indiscipline cut short how far he could go. He’s said in interviews that he thought talent alone was enough, and it cost him.
