Chelsea face key selection calls ahead of Tottenham clash

Xabi Alonso faces a major selection dilemma as Chelsea prepare for a busy week, beginning with Saturday’s London derby against Tottenham and followed by a Carabao Cup trip to Liverpool.

With most of his winning XI available, Alonso could stick with the same side, although squad rotation may be necessary.

Mike Penders is expected to start in goal following Emiliano Martínez’s jaw injury, while Josh Acheampong, Levi Colwill and Maxence Lacroix are expected to retain their defensive roles.

Midfield could see changes, with Romeo Lavia pushing for an opportunity, while the likes of Moisés Caicedo and Jordan Henderson may need careful management.

Up front, however, Chelsea’s attacking trio of Cole Palmer, Morgan Rogers and João Pedro are expected to remain unchanged as the Blues look to maintain their momentum against Spurs.

Morgan Rogers explains why Chelsea’s front three are so difficult to stop

Chelsea forward Morgan Rogers has highlighted the attacking chemistry between himself, Cole Palmer and João Pedro, describing the trio as a major tactical problem for opposition defences.

Speaking to the official Chelsea website, Rogers explained that the three attackers offer different qualities, meaning opponents cannot easily focus on one player without creating opportunities for another.

“If you try to stop Cole, then it allows me and João more space. If you try to stop me and João, then Cole's going to be free as a bird to set his authority on the game.”

Rogers believes that difference in movement and attacking styles is what makes Chelsea's front three particularly dangerous. Rather than relying on one individual to create everything, the Blues can hurt teams in several different ways.

The comments come as Rogers has made an impressive start to life under Xabi Alonso, with Chelsea's attacking unit developing a strong understanding.

For Palmer in particular, Rogers' assessment underlines the freedom he can receive when opponents concentrate on shutting down Chelsea's other attacking threats.

Chelsea will be without goalkeeper Emi Martinez for weeks after surgery on a fractured jaw, manager Xabi Alonso has confirmed. According to Goal.com, the Argentina international has undergone the procedure and now faces a spell out.

Martinez was hurt during the 2-0 Premier League win over Everton last weekend. He left in clear discomfort and was taken to hospital for assessment.

The injury followed a heavy collision with Everton defender Jarrad Branthwaite that prompted his substitution. Alonso said the operation had been completed and they must wait, adding he expects a few weeks out and hopes it is fewer rather than more.

Mike Penders will step up in goal. He replaced Martinez against Everton and has played a couple of cup games, with Alonso insisting the back-up is ready.

Chelsea now prepare for a London derby at home to Tottenham on Saturday. The club’s medical staff will monitor Martinez’s recovery.

Xabi Alonso is set to take his pre-match press conference from 1:30pm (UK time) today ahead of Chelsea's Premier League bout with Tottenham.

Saturday evening will see the Blues welcome Spurs, their fierce rivals, to Stamford Bridge under the lights in a huge top-flight clash. Chelsea go into the match as overwhelming favourites after a promising start to the season - and quite the contrast for Tottenham - but Roberto De Zerbi's side will be hoping to build some momentum after their first win of the campaign earlier this week against Coventry City.

Chelsea will be without No.1 goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez tomorrow evening after the Argentina international was stretchered off in last weekend's win over Everton. Martinez underwent surgery not long after to repair a fractured jaw but is now set for a spell on the sidelines.

We will hear from Alonso regarding the latest on Martinez, his replacement Mike Penders, an update on the fitness of Pep Chavarria, Tottenham's start to the season, and much, much more.

Managing the squad
There will be moments for everyone and everyone wants to play. It's normal. It's not rocket science to understand this is going to happen. They are important at some stage so they need to be ready.

Emegha injury latest
He is feeling better, but we need to wait.

Tottenham, Liverpool and Man Utd coming up
This happens in the Premier League. This week is three massive games against top clubs

Spurs' tough start
I have seen a good Spurs despite the results. We are expecting a tough game.

Chelsea's record vs Spurs
I knew about it but tomorrow is another game. Like last week you asked me about data we broke, it means nothing. We need to prove we can continue that run. We need to play with heart. We need many things tomorrow.

Midfield battle
Every game the midfield is a key part of the game. We have been stronger the last few games. They have a good midfield as well. We need a very complete game.

Chelsea vs Spurs rivalry
Every derby is special. You feel the energy, the excitement from the stands. We need that energy to be used on the pitch. We need to have good mentality for that and good emotional control. There's a lot of passion from both sides

Penders and Courtois similarities
A lot of similarities. Not just the nationality, but the stature. I spoke with Thibaut as well at the World Cup. He said himself he could see resemblences with Mike

We wanted to have the best possible options and we decided to move with Emi. Mike is a keeper for now and the future. Working with Emi, he's having a great impact on the team and Mike.

He's ready. He's been training well. He has shown he has a good level. When he came on, in a few minutes he showed his personality and qualities. That is why we have a squad to be ready for these situations

Chavarria and Gusto
Malo is fine. Pep is training a little bit more but he is not going to make it.

How long will Martinez be out for?
A few weeks. Hopefully less than more. We need to wait.

Emi Martinez latest
He's been better, he had the surgery. We still need to wait.

🔵 Chelsea Keep Alex Scott on Their Radar as January Interest Grows

Chelsea’s interest in Bournemouth midfielder Alex Scott remains alive, with the England international continuing to be viewed as a potential midfield target ahead of the January transfer window.

Scott was reportedly one of Chelsea’s top midfield targets during the summer, but a deal could not be completed. According to Fabrizio Romano, Chelsea have maintained contact with the player’s representatives and remain interested in bringing him to Stamford Bridge.

The situation could become more interesting in January. Bournemouth’s position on Scott has reportedly softened, with the club now prepared to consider a substantial offer under certain conditions. Reports have placed their valuation at around £100 million, although other reports suggest Bournemouth could consider offers above £80 million.

For Chelsea, the interest makes sense. With the club looking to strengthen midfield, Scott's ability to operate centrally could make him an attractive option for Xabi Alonso.

🔵 Josh Acheampong Gives Xabi Alonso a Selection Headache
Josh Acheampong is quietly becoming one of the most interesting stories at Chelsea this season.

The 20-year-old defender has started six of Chelsea’s last nine matches, accumulating 581 minutes under Xabi Alonso. His growing involvement is a clear indication that the young defender is earning the manager’s trust.

Acheampong’s recent performances have also created a positive dilemma for Alonso. With competition for places in Chelsea’s defence increasing, the youngster is making it increasingly difficult for the manager to leave him out of the starting XI.

What makes his emergence particularly encouraging is Chelsea’s recent defensive improvement. After conceding 12 league goals before the international break, the Blues have conceded just one goal in their subsequent league matches, including the impressive 2–0 victory over Everton.

For Acheampong, this is more than simply getting minutes. He is beginning to show that he can compete for a regular role at Stamford Bridge.

Xabi Alonso now has a good problem: when a young defender keeps performing, how do you leave him out?

🔵 Josh Acheampong is knocking on the door — and Chelsea may have found another important piece for the future.

Patrick Evra :" Arsenal was a walkover ,it was easy to play against them during our time, today they are most difficult team in premier league. l couldn't imagine that Arsenal one day could have the best defenders in the World, today they have two best midfielders in the premier league, you can see what Declan Rice and Ødegaard is doing, they have taken football to another level, whenever they step on the pitch you automatically notice the rhythm of the game has change.

Mikel Arteta has transformed this club, today they are the most solid team not only in premier league but in the World, last season they did well across all competition, they won the league and still manage to play two final.

Today they are the Champions after a long suffering, they have worked for it, they deserve to celebrate wherever they want. Who recall those days when Arsenal was a walkover to any team, beating Arsenal during our time wasn't a headache, it was very simple. I'm so glad for the transformation l'm seeing at Arsenal, today they can challenge for titles and win . People think that l hate Arsenal but it's always banter to me, l love bantering Arsenal.

Moisés Caicedo: Bournemouth vs Everton
Against Bournemouth — 5–1 Chelsea win
Caicedo’s return was one of the biggest positives. After recovering from his calf problem, he made his first start of the season and immediately restored balance to Chelsea’s midfield.

He made 4 successful tackles — the most by any player in the match.
He provided protection in front of the defence and allowed Jordan Henderson to play alongside him with more freedom.

Xabi Alonso specifically praised the partnership, saying Caicedo gives Chelsea “stability” in midfield.
Chelsea looked much more balanced with him back.

🔵 Against Everton — 2–0 Chelsea win
Caicedo continued that strong form today.
He started as Chelsea captain.
Just before half-time, he produced one of Chelsea's best chances: he ran around the back of Everton's defence and struck a powerful volley that hit the crossbar. Chelsea's official report described the technique as exemplary.

He helped Chelsea maintain control in midfield during a physical first half.
He was eventually replaced by Roméo Lavia in stoppage time as Chelsea protected the 2–0 victory.

Caicedo has now shown two different sides of his game in consecutive matches: against Bournemouth, he was primarily the midfield destroyer and defensive shield; against Everton, he was more involved in the attacking side of the game, even coming within inches of scoring.

His return is important for Chelsea because when Caicedo controls the middle, Chelsea have a much stronger platform for their attacking players to operate. Reuters reported that Alonso considers him a key player for the team going forward.
