Last night, a young girl found ONFL-Structures by searching Google and this is not the first time we're having this experience.

She wasn't looking for a tournament.

She was looking for a football institution around her that has training facilities and allows girls to play.

She told me she is in SS3 at Eastern Academy, Onitsha. She said she can play football and wants somewhere to train because she isn't training anywhere right now.

The way she kept following up with me touched something in me.

I became very teary while replying her.

Because just yesterday, I was talking about stepping back and rebuilding.

And here was a young girl looking for the exact structure we have been trying to build.

The painful part was that most of my answers to her were promises about the future.

I wanted to tell her, “Come, we have somewhere for you.”

But I couldn't.

Not yet.

And that helplessness stayed with me.

I kept thinking about how many young people across Nigeria are probably doing the same thing right now.

Searching.

Asking.

Looking for somewhere to train.

Looking for someone to take them seriously.

Looking for an opportunity to discover what they can become.

Maybe this is another reminder of why the work cannot stop.

The postponement changed the timing.

It did not change the reason.

Yesterday, Ozioma Ozi Anieto, my friend, father and big brother, said something to me that stayed with me.

“Ebulu laa azụ, ọ welu nnukwu ike bia ọgụ.”

When a ram steps backward, it comes back to the fight with greater force.

I immediately remembered my father.

That was the kind of phrase he used when talking to us. Next month will make it 12 years since we lost him.

Maybe that is why those words hit differently.

Since we announced the postponement of ISSC, people have reacted differently. Some are disappointed. Some are angry. Some have left the teachers’ group. Others are asking questions.

They have every right to feel however they feel.

I have experienced disappointment too. More times than I can count since ONFL started.

But I am still here.

What I need now is to regain myself, especially financially. The truth is that personal resources have carried this vision and many people around it for a long time.

That cannot remain the structure.

The vision has not changed. The plans have not disappeared.

But the way we approach them has to change.

Before ONFL embarks on another major journey, we must know that the finances required to complete it are available, even if no partner comes.

All hands must be on deck.

I cannot control what anybody chooses to say about me or ONFL-Structures.

I can only control whether I am honest about what happened and whether I learn from it.

For now, I am stepping back.

Not away.

Back.

And I intend to return stronger.

I am the Founder of ONFL, and today I have to take responsibility for a decision that hurts.

ISSC 2026 is not happening this year.

We are postponing the championship to 2027.

I know how difficult that is to hear, especially after everything that has gone into preparing for this.

I set the vision.

I approved the dates.

I asked schools to believe in us.

I asked students to look forward to something.

I brought people into the work.

I asked volunteers, partners, friends and my own team to commit their time, money, energy and reputation to this.

So I cannot hide behind the circumstances now.

The funding situation is real. The schools needed more time. We have faced disappointments. We have had commitments change. There are still resources and structures required to deliver ISSC at the standard we promised.

But ultimately, the responsibility for deciding whether we are ready belongs to me.

I could force the championship to happen somehow.

I could borrow heavily, stretch the team beyond reason and put something on the pitch simply because we announced a date.

But that would defeat everything I have been preaching about Structure Before Talent.

I cannot ask schools and students to trust us, then give them something that I know is not adequately prepared.

So I am making the harder decision.

I would rather disappoint expectations today than disappoint the students tomorrow.

I am sorry to every student who was looking forward to ISSC.

I am sorry to every school that prepared.

I am sorry to everyone who gave us their time, resources and trust.

And I am grateful to everyone who believed in us enough to get us this far.

This is not me giving up on ISSC.

This is me accepting my responsibility as its Founder.

We are taking what we have built, what we have learned and what remains unfinished into 2027.

ISSC 2027 begins now.

And this time, I know exactly what I am responsible for.

OFFICIAL ANNOUNCEMENT

ISSC 2026 HAS BEEN POSTPONED

After an extensive review of our preparations, funding position and the resources required to deliver ISSC to the standard we have promised our schools, students, partners and the wider community, the management of the Onitsha NextGeneration Football League has taken the difficult decision to postpone the 2026 edition of the ONFL Inter-City Secondary School Championship.

This has not been an easy decision.

For months, we have worked to build a championship that brings 21 secondary schools across 6 communities together through football, knowledge, talent discovery and student recognition. We secured formal approval from the Anambra State Ministry of Education and committed significant personal and organisational resources towards bringing this vision to life.

However, one principle must remain above the pressure to simply hold an event:

We must not put our students, schools, partners, volunteers or team into a programme that we are not adequately prepared and resourced to deliver.

After careful consideration, we have therefore decided that ISSC will move to 2027. The new delivery period will be announced after the 2027 presidential election and completion of the necessary planning and preparations.

THIS IS NOT THE END OF ISSC.

It is a decision to give ISSC the time it needs to build the right partnerships, secure the required resources, strengthen its team and prepare properly for the students and schools at the heart of the championship.

All preparations, commitments and resources already put into the project will be reviewed and carried forward where applicable as we transition into the 2027 planning phase.

To the schools, students, teachers, partners, volunteers, supporters and everyone who believed in this project, thank you.

We know many people were looking forward to seeing ISSC happen this year. We understand the disappointment that this decision may bring, but we believe that building it properly is more important than rushing to launch it simply because we announced a date.

We would rather disappoint expectations today than disappoint the students tomorrow.

ISSC 2027 begins now.

THE CAPTAIN HAS SPOKEN.

We caught up with the captain of Mercil Innovative College, Obosi ahead of ISSC 2026.

He plays on the wing, but his focus isn't just about getting on the scoresheet.

He wants to create chances for his teammates.

For him, being a winger is about creating opportunities and helping the team get forward.

It is designed to create opportunities for young students to compete, be discovered, build confidence, learn discipline and connect with other communities.
