This is what intensive farming looks like multiple snail pens managed on one farm. With the right setup and proper management, you can maximize your space and grow your snail business.

Free-range or intensive system: which one really gives you better control over your snail farm?

One of the biggest challenges with the free-range system is accountability.

Because the snails are scattered across a large space and vegetation can cover them, it becomes difficult to know exactly what is happening in the farm. How many snails are actually there? How many are growing well? How many are missing? How much feed are they consuming?

With the intensive system, everything is much easier to monitor and manage because the snails are concentrated within controlled spaces.

Then there is the issue of cost.

The intensive system may require more investment at the beginning because you are deliberately creating and controlling the environment. But over time, proper management can make the system more efficient and predictable.

Interestingly, the free-range system has one major advantage: you can do more with less.

With the right farm design, sensors and actuators can be incorporated into the system to automate certain processes. This means one person can potentially manage a functional farm without needing a large workforce.

So, is free-range better than intensive?

It depends on what you are trying to achieve.

But if your priority is control, accountability, efficient use of space and the ability to monitor your production closely, the intensive system deserves serious consideration.

I broke down these differences in the video. Watch it and tell me which system you prefer for your farm: Intensive or Free-range?

It is very important to loosen your snail pen soil regularly.
Some snail eggs can be hidden or covered by sand, making them difficult to notice. Gently loosening the soil helps you discover these eggs and care for them properly.
