Bayern Munich are interested in appointing Louis van Gaal
Van Gaal was sacked by Manchester United in 2016 after winning the FA Cup.

The Dutchman, who has also managed Barcelona on two occasions, has previously been in charge of Bayern.

He endured a 22-month stint as Munich manager before being sacked in April 2011 after losing out on the Bundesliga title race.

The Dutchman has previously said he was ready to retire from football management.

But German newspaper Westdeutsche Allgemeine Zeitung claim he is in place for a surprise return to Bayern.

Barca snubbed Dybala deal

18:47: Barcelona rejected the option of signing Juventus forward Paulo Dybala twice in the summer as they focused all their attention on Liverpool playmaker Philippe Coutinho.

That is according to Spanish TV show El Chiringuito, who claim Barcelona were offered Dybala on two separate occasions.

But Barca turned down the option to bring the Juventus man to the Nou Camp in order to try and sign Liverpool playmaker Philippe Coutinho.

Barcelona made three bids to land the Brazil international, the last offer understood to be worth £118million.

Coutinho handed in a transfer request at Anfield to force through a move to Barca - but Liverpool stood firm and resisted any approach.

Coutinho to Barca still on

16:52: Philippe Coutinho will leave Liverpool to join Barcelona next summer, says former Reds striker John Aldridge.

He told the Liverpool Echo: ”He's a lovely fella, he's a good family man, and Barcelona turned his head. It can happen.

"The move over there didn't happen for him but I'm sure he'll give us a really good season and wave goodbye next summer, because Barca will come back for him, he's too good to be ignored."

Rafinha seeks January exit

14.45: Barcelona midfielder Rafinha is reportedly a January target for Liverpool, Arsenal and Tottenham, according to reports in Spain.

He was linked with a move away from the Nou Camp this summer but a long-term knee injury put paid to his exit.

However, the midfielder has been working hard to get back to full fitness and is targeting a January move.

And according to Spanish newspaper Mundo Deportivo, the 24-year-old is attracting attention from Liverpool, Arsenal and Tottenham.

Barca defeat shows United are strong - Wilkins

12.05: Real Madrid’s Spanish Super Cup win over Barcelona last month shows just how good a team Manchester United are, according to pundit and former Manchester United midfielder Ray Wilkins.

Real Madrid east past Barcelona 5-1 on aggregate to win Spain’s season curtain raiser.

Just five days before the first leg, Real had beaten United 2-1 in the European Super Cup final.

Wilkins says the ease of which Real went on to beat rivals Barcelona shows how good United are.

“When I saw them lose to Real Madrid I thought ‘wow’ that was a beating but at times Manchester United took them to the sword as well,” Wilkins said on Sky Sports.

“Then when I saw Real Madrid play Barcelona and they wiped the floor with Barcelona, I think it puts into perspective how good Manchester United could be this season.”

Barnes happy Coutinho stays

11.30: Liverpool legend John Barnes thought Philippe Coutinho was going to join Barcelona this summer but has praised his former club for standing firm and refusing to sell.

Barnes says he was initially surprised Liverpool turned down over £100million for Coutinho but reckons Reds manager Jurgen Klopp would have had a big influence in stopping him leaving the club.

“Who could have thought Liverpool could have turned down a bid of £140million for a footballer?” Barnes said on Sky Sports.

“Initially I did (think he would go) but towards the end I was with Liverpool.

“The good thing about Liverpool is that Jurgen Klopp is in complete control of everything at the club.”

Messi could leave for free

10.15: Lionel Messi could leave Barcelona on a free transfer next summer, according to Spanish football expert Terry Gibson.

Messi is yet to sign the new contract he agreed earlier in the summer and has grown frustrated with the club in the transfer market.

Messi is worried the club has not added enough quality following the departure of Neymar and fears being left behind by rivals Real Madrid.

"I always thought Lionel Messi, like Andres Iniesta and Xavi, would spend the bulk of the serious part of his career at Barcelona," Gibson told La Liga Weekly.

"For years I found it hard to envisage how anyone could afford to take Messi away from Barcelona, but now we've seen the emergence of Manchester City and Paris Saint-Germain.

"Now I'm looking at the fact he's got only a year left on his contract. I think the new contract offer is worth €24m-a-year but if he was available on a free transfer Barca's offer would get dwarfed. If a PSG or a Manchester City can get an out-of-contract Messi we're talking, with the price of players now, €100m, €150m, €200m.

"I know he's 30 now but in terms of prestige and what a signing like that can bring to the club would be a real coup. It's not just the marketing, it is 50 games and 50 goals a season in whatever league he goes and plays in. I didn't think it would happen, but I actually think it might now."

Chelsea news Alvaro Morata injuryGETTY
Alvaro Morata's injury is a fresh headache for Chelsea boss Antonio Conte
Morata injured his hamstring during Chelsea’s 1-0 loss to Manchester City on Saturday.

He has been forced to withdraw from Spain’s squad for the upcoming international break.

Spain have released further information on Morata’s injury, confirming he had suffered a grade II hamstring tear.

He was assessed at Madrid’s University Hospital Sanitas La Moraleja.

An injury of that severity takes up to eight weeks to recover from - although Chelsea will hope their star striker is back sooner.

Morata has started well at Chelsea since his arrival from Real Madrid in a £60million deal this summer.

The forward has scored seven goals for his new club and also netted in the 3-0 World Cup qualifying win over Italy at the start of September.

Were Morata to require the full recovery period to get over his injury he could miss a number of key Chelsea games.

The Blues face Manchester United at the start of November in a crunch title clash, while they play Liverpool at the end of that month.

Chelsea also play Roma home and away in the Champions League.

Morata was replaced by Willian during the City defeat despite like-for-like forward Michy Batshuayi being on the bench.

Spain coach Julen Lopetegui has confirmed his replacement for Morata ahead of their final qualifiers against Albania and Israel over the next fortnight.

Veteran Aritz Aduriz comes in for Morata, while Alvaro Odriozola and Jonathan Viera also join the squad.

The Manchester City forward was expected to be sidelined for between two and four weeks after breaking a rib in the road accident last Thursday.

That would have ruled the 29-year-old out of Argentina's final two World Cup qualifiers against Peru and Ecuador, but could have seen him in contention for City's Premier League match at home to Stoke on October 14.

However, Villani believes Aguero will be out longer than first thought.

"He's feeling very bad because he was really looking forward to coming to play and this incident, which had nothing to do with him, left him out of the two games," Villani said.
