Nigerian born environment scientist, Dr S**a Momta, reveals solution to global pollution

By Ignatius Chukwu

Rivers-born Nigerian environmental scientist, Dr S**a Momta, has unveiled what he regards as solution to global environment pollution.

The discovery has been tested in some polluted areas in the oil region and has allegedly been demonstrated before an oil operating giant in the region.

Dr momta, who was guest of the Energy and Maritime Reporters (EMR) Roundtable on Rivers State Television (RSTV) this week said the research had spanned over 30 years. He described it as organic-based nanotechnology.

The scientist said it was sad that every aspect of the environment has been affected: infrastructure, human beings, even the organisms are affected.

He said: “The creeks, waterways, water bodies, streams, groundwater are heavily polluted.”

He said there were conventional approaches used to remedy the situation, but despite all these efforts made, people were still agitating that the pollution was much, and getting worse. “In fact, the environment of the Niger Delta is described as a fragile ecosystem because of the pollution, despite all these efforts made.”

He said the new approach turns the waste to drinkable water and the water can be discharged back to the environment or used for irrigation.

Explaining details, Dr Momta said: “Our team carried out an independent investigation in a particular community in Niger Delta. That community is a very large town that has a population of over 400,000 people. We sampled 10 locations for groundwater (the water they are drinking from). We picked on only two pollutants, organic pollutants that are associated with oil and gas. We picked Polyaliphatic Biphenyls (PCB) and Polychlorinated Hydrocarbons (PAH). The Polyaliphatic Hydrocarbon is an organic compound that has high concentration of benzene ring.”

He said the United Nations has also carried out investigation in that particular community. “And what we know about PCB and PAH is that they are always reported to be organic pollutants that are very persistent in place you find them.”

He said in 2024 in Lagos, he discussed his discovery in an international conference and professors and industry experts showed huge interest but kept asking one question: “How long can this tech you are talking about take to destroy and dissolve PCB and PAH?’ I said, a matter of hours."

He said they kept wondering if it was possible but that he kept saying it was not about what is possible but what is being done.

His words: “So, it can dissolve any organic compound just within hours, break it and turn it to water.”

He said his team has demonstrated this with a particular operator in Nigeria in the oil and gas industry. “And we used their facility, we used their test equipment, and they saw the result within hours that thick hydrocarbon was turned to water. They tested it and the properties were the same properties of water in terms of pH and other—it lost the hydrocarbon, lost all its hydrocarbon properties just within hours.”

Insisting there is no problem without a solution, Dr Momta said: “And what we are saying here now is that we have a permanent solution to the environmental challenges as it has to do with oil spill in the Niger Delta.

“It’s a permanent solution. That solution is to restore the environment back to its original state. So, there have been over 30 years of research on the best approach to address environmental challenges relating to oil and gas operation.

“And an organic-based nanotechnology has been developed that is addressing these concerns. Where conventional approach will take years without restoring the environment, this method can work within weeks and months.”

He named another major concern as the produced water. “Companies that are producing oil—in all the hydrocarbon comes out with three phases: it comes with water, comes with oil, and comes with gas. So they separate the oil and gas and then water. The water that is coming out is not pure water. It’s impregnated with hydrocarbon compounds.

“And that is why Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC) will not allow any company to discharge that water in the environment. And before you discharge, they give you guidelines; you will tell them how you are going to handle your produced water.

“But I’m telling them that with this our organic-based nanotechnology, that produced water can be treated and they will discharge it into the environment and use it for irrigation. So going forward, the pollution in the ground—and of course, some of the conventional methods used to address spill in the area -- is like they did excavation. So if you want to address pollution in underground water, that is within the community where people are living, you no longer will face the challenge of whether to evacuate all the people in the community, pull down their buildings, and excavate them to the aquifer. No.

“But we are telling you that it doesn’t matter the depth where the organic compounds have contaminated the groundwater. We are going to treat it without removing any building, without destroying crops, and then find a permanent solution to it. So we can restore our environment to its natural state using this our organic-based nanotechnology.”

On costs, he admitted that the new method is more expensive but has zero risk. He added: “But look at the advantages. Number one, it’s not going to harm any human being. It’s not going to harm any crop. It’s not going to harm even earthworm in the ground, the soil. It’s not going to harm anything whereas some of the conventional methods always lead to re-contamination. There will be no re-contamination. It has zero effect to the environment, to the ecosystem.

“Yes, other disadvantages associated with the conventional methods are not there. So when you count the risks that are associated with other conventional methods, and this one has no risk. You look at the material data sheet of that organic-based nanotech, it's zero on all risks.”

EXPERT DISCOVERS SCIENTIFIC SOLUTION TO GLOBAL ENVIRONMENTAL CHALLENGES.

Respite is underway for a global solution to environmental challenges caused by Oil and Gas pollution emanating from prospecting and mining of Oil and Gas businesses globally.

Speaking exclusively on the Energy and Maritime Roundtable TV program in Port Harcourt, an Energy expert Dr. S**a M***a said after over 30 years of research, he has discovered a permanent solution to the environmental challenges as it has to do with Oil Spills in the Niger Delta,on the best approach that can be used to address the environmental challenges relating to Oil and Gas operation.

Speaking on the topic, Tackling Environmental challenges in the Niger Delta, the way forward, the Environmental scientist Dr. Momta said the pollution affects humans, infrastructure and all living organisms on every aspect of the environment, describing the Niger Delta Region as a fragile Ecosystem.

According to him, there is no problem without a solution as an organic based nanotechnology have been developed these concerns which conventional approach will take years and yet will not be able to restore the environment.

Total commits N150m to grassroots basketball development

The Nigeria Basketball Federation has signed a 5-year deal with Total E&P Nigeria worth N150m ( One Hundred and Fifty Million naira) for the sponsorship of the Men’s Divisions One and Two leagues.

The NBBF and Total partnership which will run between 2020 and 2025 will see Divisions One and Two receiving fifteen million naira (N15m) each annually to organize and run the leagues.

Speaking at the event held on Tuesday September 15, 2020 in Lagos which had the Minister of Youth and Sports, Sunday Dare in attendance, NBBF President, Engr Musa Kida said the sponsorship by Total E&P which is the first ever partnership with the lower levels of basketball has opened a new vista in the corporate sponsorship of sports in Nigeria.

“Being satisfied with the concept and organization of the leagues in the past two years, we are very elated that Total E&P Nigeria Limited has now committed to extend their sponsorship arrangement with the NBBF for both competitions under the same framework for another 5 years (2020-2025)”

Commenting further, Kida thanked the Company for the confidence reposed in the NBBF by extending the sponsorship of the Divisions One and Two leagues for another five years as it underscores the commitment of Total E&P to develop Nigerian youths in all facets of life through their Corporate Responsibility objectives.

The NBBF President revealed that apart from the latest sponsorship, “Total E&P has also uplifted the NBBF in many spheres since this present board was inaugurated in 2017. For example, in addition to financial and related support to the NBBF, Total was the first corporate body to receive the men and women after their 2017 Afrobasket heroics.

“It is also on record that Total contributed to D’Tigers becoming the first country in the world to qualify for the 2019 FIBA World Cup in China after which Nigeria hosted two windows during the qualifiers”.

He promised the federation’s commitment to play its part in enhancing the success of the mutual beneficial partnership.

MD/CEO of Total E&P Nigeria, Engr Mike Sangster noted that their continued interest in developing sports and empowering youths in Nigeria coupled with the continued growth of basketball made the decision for the renewed partnership easier.

"The growth trajectory of Nigerian basketball since the initial agreement was signed two years ago, has proved to us that our decision to identify with the body was not misplaced. Indeed, we are particularly proud that one driver of the successes that has given Nigerian basketball the magnetic appeal it has today, is our Deputy Managing Director (Deepwater), Engineer Ahmadu-Kida”.

Sangster noted that, "The Nigerian grassroots basketball has been energised and repositioned with the Total sponsored Division 1 and 2 domestic leagues. The leagues have been expanded under a new format to enable over 150 teams to participate."

For him, the recent gesture is a reflection of the company's appreciation of the role of sports in harnessing the energy of young people, boosting productivity as well as nation building."

The Honorable Minister, Sunday Dare who commended the federation said the latest partnership is in line with Government’s plan for sports development which involves public and private partnership in sports through the Federal, State and Local Governments to cooperate and move sports forward, ensuring holistic grassroots sports development from bottom-up.

“The signing of this MoU demonstrates once again the good will and corporate social responsibility of Total E&P Nigeria in identifying with Basketball development in our country. This is transformational.”

He commended the NBBF President and his board for their consistency in making Nigeria proud with great achievements at both National and International levels.

“I must state here that Government is more than ever determined to provide a conducive atmosphere to stimulate corporate involvement in Sports development in the Country. I commend Total E&P Nigeria Li

*Coronavirus: Every African nation seeks help from Fifa's Covid fund:*

Every single country in Africa has applied to Fifa to access a grant through the world governing body's Covid-19 Relief Plan.

Formally approved in July, the Fifa fund is making US$1.5 billion available to its 211 member associations and six confederations.

On Wednesday, Fifa announced that it believes the coronavirus pandemic has cost the global football economy an estimated $14 billion.

"Fifty-four African member associations have applied for grants," a Fifa spokesperson told BBC Sport Africa.

Fifa has revealed that over 150 countries have already applied for the scheme, meaning Africa represents around a third of the countries to have made such a request.

Every member association can apply for a grant of up to $1.5m, a third of which has to be spent on women's football - a 'key element of the Covid Relief Plan', Fifa says.

Confederations can apply for up to $2m in funding, with four of Fifa's six confederations having done so.

BBC Sport Africa understands the Confederation of African Football is not among them, despite postponing a handful of income-generating tournaments and facing a legal bill that could amount to tens of millions after abruptly cancelling a billion-dollar broadcast deal last year.

There is no timescale on the request for loans, meaning that both member associations and confederations can apply as and when they need.

"Essentially, this is not about distributing money but achieving the right social and economic impact to support club football, players, staff, youth academies and member associations through these troubled waters," said Olli Rehn, chairman of the Fifa fund's steering committee.

Rehn, the current Governor of the Bank of Finland, added that comprehensive auditing and compliance checks will be carried out to ensure all funds reach their intended destination.

"This is at the heart of this Covid relief fund," the 58-year-old told reporters. "We do request and require full compliance with the best auditing standards. Corruption has no room in football."

Two audits will be carried out on all funds devoted to countries, one conducted by a federation itself while the other will be carried out by a Fifa-approved auditor.

Under the plan, countries can also apply for an interest-free loan ranging from $0.5-5m which will be no greater than 35% of a federation's annual revenues.

Meanwhile, confederations can access a loan of up to $4m should they fulfil the various criteria.
