The Invisible Illness
Not every illness is visible.
Yet the battles within the body can be very real.
In celebration of International Women’s Day, I had the privilege of speaking about a condition often referred to as the “invisible illness.” For a long time, I hesitated to speak openly about it because it is widely misunderstood and can easily stigmatize those who live with it.
At the event hosted by the Association of Nigerian Female Students (AFNS), I spoke about the misconceptions surrounding lupus, the need to create safe spaces where women can speak about their health struggles without fear, and messages of hope for those living with chronic illnesses today.
Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE) is a condition that mimics many other illnesses, which often makes it difficult to diagnose. Sadly, many sufferers have been misunderstood, misdiagnosed, or even accused of having spiritual problems. Yet with proper medical care, awareness, and healthy lifestyle management, many lupus warriors can live meaningful and purposeful lives.
To every Lupus warrior and everyone living with a chronic health condition who shows up each day despite the uncertainty of how their body may respond, I see you.
You are strong. You are resilient.
I am deeply grateful to the for the opportunity to represent them and for the honour of receiving an award on behalf of the selfless and sacrificial work of SafinatEmenego in championing the cause of lupus warriors.
My sincere thanks to the leadership of the Association of Nigerian Female Students for providing this platform and for continuing to champion the cause of resilient and purposeful women.
It was also an honour to share the stage with remarkable women including the Mandate Secretary for Women’s Affairs Secretariat in the FCT, Hon. Benjamins-Laniyi, Aisha Shuaibu, ,the TOS Group, and PrettyDarkDiva.
This month, I stand in solidarity with all Lupus Warriors.

The last few years have been a journey I never imagined. After years of not knowing what was attacking my body, I was finally diagnosed with not one, but two autoimmune conditions.
Super-energetic me became hospital-bound for months. I heard hurtful things… someone suggested I resign because I was an “Ogbanje.” Another said he’d divorce me if I were his wife. It was that bad.
But I chose faith.
Like the l***rs Jesus told to go show themselves to the priest, I decided to step out again even while still on treatment trusting God for complete healing. I told myself, “I’ll live fully, watch for the signs, and when the healing is complete, I’ll return to say thank you.”
Today, I kept that promise. I returned.
I danced before God with my thanksgiving offering, knelt at the altar and thanked God for how far He has brought me.
Between then and now: countless hospital visits, daily medication, strict routines, new knowledge & lifestyle changes… and God’s mercy carrying me through it all.
Sometimes the miracle is sudden. Sometimes it’s the discovery of the ailment, the discipline that preserves from further detoriation , the people who know what to do or the process that must run its course. God is behind every route.
Look at me now. Do I look like someone who has battled chronic illness? Isn’t it marvelous?
So here’s my encouragement:
God is in your story. Seek his face. Talk to doctors. Take care of yourself. Eat well. Rest. Be wise. But never settle for a life you don’t want. God desires that we prosper and be in good health. He’ll partner with you on that.
I’ve been through the fire, but the smell of smoke isn’t on me.Like that l***r, I have returned to say thank you to God.
Happy Thanksgiving. ❤️

Recently had the privilege of attending the grand reopening of the Gallery, an inspiring event sponsored by the Bank of Industry. The highlight for me was the rich panel session, robust conversations around how the Nigerian government can better support and promote our incredible local artists. The dialogue was honest, insightful, and full of both challenges and opportunities.
As an architect who now procures artwork for client projects(and as a closet artist who hasn’t freehand-sketched or painted in over 20 years) it stirred something in me. I felt my love for fine art waking up again. It also deepened my curiosity about how architecture, interior design, furniture, and fine art can blend more intentionally to enrich the world of design and space. I even discovered something new: the world of utility art.
Kudos to Ahmed Bello for curating the Vantage Point Art Exhibition so thoughtfully.
I met incredible talents- Faruk Umar of “Expressions by Alfaruk” with his avant-garde Islamic calligraphy, Maryam Maigida and her beautiful bursts of colour, Ameh Odachi whose mosaic work is simply brilliant, Nnenna the gifted beads artist, and Pauline Malize whose textured pieces were stunning. I also had a meaningful conversation with Nasir Ozovehe from the Bank of Industry, one of the panelists whose insights stood out to me.
And my favourite painting of the day? I didn’t catch the artist’s name, but the piece felt like home reminding me of my family.

Some friendships are born out of laughter.
Some out of shared pain.
But the most powerful ones are born out of purpose.
When purpose births a friendship, there’s alignment, growth, and depth. You sharpen one another. You remind each other of who you are becoming.
Life gets busy. Seasons change. But purpose connections are worth nurturing intentionally. Don’t lose touch with the people who carry pieces of your becoming.
Stay connected. Keep watering what’s real. 💛

In the design and build industry, no masterpiece is created in isolation. True innovation happens when architects, engineers, builders, and clients share ideas, align visions, and work as one team.
When we collaborate, we don’t just construct buildings; we create harmony between design, functionality, and purpose.
Because great spaces aren’t just designed; they’re co-created. 🤝
