In this first episode of our Hand Trapping Series, we explore the difference between placing your hands on your opponent’s bicepsβ€”a form of control we often use in self-defenseβ€”and grabbing their hands. We keep it basic, introducing how these positions influence control and create opportunities to strike. A starting point before exploring kicks, knees and elbows in future episodes πŸ€™

In this episode of our Haymaker Defense Series, we start with our basic defense: a wedge or spear, followed by strikes to disrupt the attacker. From there, we explore an elbow lock and a controlled transition to the ground.
That final sequence is a more complex optionβ€”consider it a bonus, rather than something you need to add to every defense. For self-defense, keep it simple. Train the basics first and build from there πŸ€™

In this episode of our Closed Guard Series, we explore a wrist lock from the bottom position when our opponent pins our arm or wrist. Their attempt to control us creates an opportunity to reverse the situation. The focus is on recognising the opening and finding the right angle, rather than forcing the lock πŸ€™

Our students try out a flinch drill inspired by Bas Rutten. We explore how to turn a natural startle response into a protective movement, bringing the arms up to cover the head and staying ready to respond. We start slowly and build up the pressure, helping students become more comfortable with incoming attacks πŸ€™

In this episode of our Joint Lock Series, we explore how an S-lock and an elbow lock can flow into one another as the position changes. We finish on the ground, sitting over the shoulder to isolate it and securing the arm between the thighs. The focus is on not so much on practicality but on skill development connecting the locks and maintaining control πŸ€™

Grappling Game No. 9 focuses on developing your side control. The top player’s goal is to move between different side control positions while maintaining control. The bottom player aims to recover guard or reverse the position and get on top. This game teaches you to adapt under dynamic pressure, with constraints that keep the focus on developing your side control. Try it for yourself!

Over the past year, we started integrating Constraint-Led Approach (CLA) into our training. Instead of only drilling techniques, we use Grappling games (or Eco games) that force students to adapt, make decisions and solve problems under pressure. The goal? Better awareness and better skills that transfer to real situations πŸ€™

Kick Defense Series. Two training partners take turns throwing roundhouse kicks while the defender explores different ways to block, redirect or evade.
This dynamic drill challenges timing, positioning and the ability to reset for the next attack. Explore different responses and adapt to the distance and angle of each kick. Try it! πŸ€™

In part one, we explore a double-arm block, creating a wedge or spear structure to defend against a haymaker and move into close range. From here, we follow up with headbutts, knees or elbows to disrupt the attacker’s balance and ability to continue attacking. Keep it simple and use gross motor skills. Next week we follow up with a joint lock and takedown! πŸ€™
