Uit de as herrijzend Oranje bezorgt Zuid-Afrika pijnlijke WK-nederlaag

Op het WK cricket in India heeft het Nederlands elftsal voor een sensatie gezorgd door Zuid-Afrika te verslaan met 245 – 207. Het was voor eerst dat Nederland een topland versloeg op een Wereldkampioenschap in de lange variant (300 ballen per team).

Lang zag het daar overigens niet naar uit. Op een tussenstand van 140 runs was Nederland al zeven slaglieden kwijt. Aanvoerder Scott Edwards speelde echter een fantastische innings en bleef met 78 runs ongeslagen. De 38-jarige routinier Roelof van der Merwe maakte 29 cruciale runs en ook de 20-jarige A***n Dutt, die drie zessen sloeg, leverde een belangrijke bijdrage aan het Nederlandse eindtotaal van 245 runs.

Oranje startte de Zuid-Afrikaanse slagbeurt vervolgens furieus met de internationale topwickets van De K**k, Bavuma, Van der Dussen en Markram. De wedstrijd leek weer te kantelen toen Klaasen en Miller (43 runs) in de middle order verzet boden. Logan van Beek zorgde echter voor de dubbele doorbraak en nam ook het laatste wicket, waarmee hij Nederland een historische zege bezorgde.
