Protect Your Elbow | Triangle Defense

This video shows a classic Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu triangle defense technique from a match featuring Marcos Flexa in the 1990s, long before becoming the Head Coach of Carlson Gracie Amsterdam.

This week, I demonstrated this same technique in class, showing our students how to protect the elbow and pull the arm back before the opponent can isolate it and set up a triangle choke.

My opponent was well known at the time for catching many fighters with the triangle, making arm control, elbow positioning, and defensive awareness especially important.

This is a great example of how small details in BJJ technique and triangle defense can make a big difference when fighting against an experienced opponent.

In the background, you can hear Marcelo Alonso shouting during the match. The referee was Mestre Crezio Chaves.
