How far can you drive from Washington, DC?

A drive-time map centred on Washington, DC reveals how road accessibility spreads across the contiguous United States over equal time intervals. 🗺️

One important detail is what counts as an “Interstate”. In OpenStreetMap, `highway=motorway` can include freeways beyond the Interstate system, such as California’s State Highway 99. For an Interstate-only selection, use `network=US:I` route relations and their member ways rather than selecting every motorway.

Travel-time estimates are also not guarantees: real-world conditions and stops can add time, and the map’s reported reach towards Maine has been questioned. For a closer look at regional accessibility, a Mid-Atlantic version measured in minutes could make nearby destinations easier to compare.

Child mortality has fallen across every world region 📉🌍

Between 1950 and 2025, the global under-five mortality rate fell from approximately 23% to 3.5%, according to UN population estimates and projections.

The decline is visible across all regions, although substantial differences remain:
🔹 Africa: 33% → 6.1%
🔹 Asia: 25% → 2.5%

Regional averages tell an important story, but they can also hide considerable differences between individual countries.

A useful example of how long-term data visualisation can reveal global progress while reminding us why geographical scale and aggregation matter.

Europe's languages around 500 AD 🗺️

A look at Europe's linguistic landscape during the Migration Period, long before today's national borders took shape.

The map illustrates the approximate distribution of languages and language groups, including Latin, Greek, Germanic, Celtic and early Finnic varieties.

But mapping historical languages comes with some important challenges:

🔸 Language boundaries were rarely as clearly defined as the colours suggest.
🔸 Multilingual communities, regional dialects and minority languages are difficult to represent on a single map.
🔸 Historical evidence is often incomplete, making some geographical distributions highly uncertain.

Several regional classifications and boundaries shown here have also been questioned, highlighting how differently historical evidence can be interpreted.

A useful reminder that maps are not just representations of data. The choices we make about classification, boundaries and uncertainty shape how that information is understood.

Japanese woodblock landscapes, generated in QGIS 🗺️

The Ukiyo-e Relief plugin transforms digital elevation models into Japanese woodblock-style landscapes. No generative AI or hand painting involved: just Python, NumPy and terrain data.

Using a Copernicus GLO-30 DEM, the plugin recreates traditional printmaking effects through:
🔸 Layered colour plates based on distance or elevation
🔸 Bokashi gradients and terrain-aware silhouette outlines
🔸 Snow patterns, wood grain and simulated printing imperfections

Want to try it yourself? Select Layered landscape mode for the oblique perspectives shown here. DEM resolution and scene selection matter: mountainous coastal landscapes tend to produce more distinctive results than flat terrain.
