Clostridium tetani 🧫🔬
A Gram-positive, obligately anaerobic, spore-forming bacillus and the causative agent of tetanus. Its characteristic terminal spores give the bacillus a “drumstick” or “tennis-racket” appearance.
🔬 Key laboratory features:
• Gram-positive, slender bacillus
• Obligate anaerobe
• Motile and spore-forming
• Terminal spherical spores → drumstick appearance
• Produces tetanospasmin (tetanus neurotoxin)
• Toxin interferes with inhibitory neurotransmission, producing muscle rigidity and spasms
• Spores are commonly found in soil and animal f***s
💉 Prevention: Tetanus is preventable through vaccination and appropriate wound management.

Pseudomonas aeruginosa 🧫🔬
An important Gram-negative, aerobic, non-fermenting bacillus and an opportunistic pathogen associated with healthcare- and community-acquired infections.

🔬 Key laboratory features:
• Gram-negative, slender bacillus
• Oxidase positive
• Motile with polar flagella
• Non-lactose fermenter on MacConkey agar
• Produces blue-green pigment (pyocyanin) and fluorescent pyoverdine
• Characteristic grape-like/fruity odor in culture
• Can grow at 42°C
• Important cause of infections in vulnerable patients, including pneumonia, wound infections, UTIs and bacteremia

Op de Spoedeisende Hulp meldt zich een 37-jarige kapster met een infectie van haar rechterhand en meerdere necrotische ulcera die zijn ontstaan na een kleine verwonding door een manicure een week eerder.
Daarnaast had ze klachten van algehele malaise, koorts en keelpijn. ­Patiënte had behalve een lumbosacraal radiculair syndroom een blanco voorgeschiedenis en gaf aan geen chronische medicatie te gebruiken.

Door familie omstandigheden kan de workshop Oil'n More op zaterdag 5 september niet doorgaan.
