24th in the world 🌺
I said I wanted the real Kona experience and I think I got it 😵💫
I started feeling kinda rough 1500m into the swim then spent the entire bike throwing up and unable to keep down a single sip of water or gel 🥴 I pulled over at 30km projectile vomiting and wondering how I’d manage another 150km. I simply told myself just get to the turnaround then I’d have no choice but to ride back 😆
The headwind home across those lava fields was brutal. By T2 I had pretty much accepted I may be walking the marathon.
Thankfully my stomach settled on the run once I was upright and I somehow managed to take on fluids and gels again. I ended up running almost the entire marathon alongside Kate Curran -which was by far the highlight (aside from that finish line 😆) - We kept each other going and managed to move up the field.
I’d planned ~100g of carbs an hour but finished the race on just ~300g total for the WHOLE RACE. I lost around 15% of my body weight and spent some time in medical afterwards but I’m fine now.
Huge congrats to the most deserving champions in Taylor Knibb and Vince, everyone who made it through that brutal day and everyone who had the courage to toe the start line but for whatever reason wasn’t able to finish. It is no easy feat lining up for a race knowing you’re going to be out there all day battling everything Kona brings. Just making that start line is an effort in itself.
Thank you to all the volunteers and the Kona locals. How lucky we are to race in such a special and iconic location.
Initial comments on completion: “never again”. [has been said and withdrawn previously…]😜
