"Mijn hand reikt uit , maar ik niet"
Over onderbroken uitreiking

Reconciliation
Most conflict interventions start with connection.
Systemically, that may be exactly the wrong place to begin
The source of many conflicts lies in two realities that appear irreconcilable. When tension arises, there is often a strong impulse to find a solution as quickly as possible. We try to reduce differences, negotiate compromises, or reach agreement. While this can sometimes be helpful, from a systemic perspective it is not always the first step.
Conflicts often do not point to a lack of agreement, but to the existence of a difference that wants to be seen. As long as that difference is not truly acknowledged, it will usually continue to manifest itself in one form or another.
From a systemic perspective, reconciliation therefore does not begin with connection, but with distinction. Not with eliminating the difference, but with recognizing it.
Only when both realities are fully allowed to be visible does the possibility of a different movement emerge. Attention then shifts from fighting over the difference to being at peace with the difference.
In practice, the emphasis is often placed on reducing oppositions. Much less attention is given to fully acknowledging what distinguishes people or groups from one another. Yet this is often where an important key can be found.
A first step toward systemic reconciliation may be to look at what appears irreconcilable, to honour the distance, and to temporarily let go of the need to connect immediately. This is something quite different from passively accepting a situation. Rather, it requires actively consenting to the fact that, at this moment, a fundamental difference exists between A and B, and that this difference apparently has meaning.
When the difference is truly acknowledged, space sometimes emerges for something new. Not because A and B become the same after all, but because a different relationship to the difference becomes possible.
A second step may be to honour the deepest origin: the source from which both A and B have emerged. Recognizing this shared origin creates space for a perspective in which both realities can exist side by side without excluding one another.
From that perspective, a form of reconciliation may arise that is not based on being right, winning, or persuading, but on acknowledging what is.
The future that then unfolds is usually impossible to predict. It does not arise from repairing the past, but from a movement of life itself—a movement that is constantly transforming and continually presenting itself anew.
Have you ever experienced a situation in which acknowledging the difference created more movement than trying to resolve it?

One of the sessions that made a deep impression on me was marked by the naturalness and the client’s willingness to fully reveal herself—above all, to herself. In such moments, a form of transformational learning can emerge: learning that draws directly from life force.
A session then becomes a dance in which the “unbearable” is carried together.
“Trembling as a life seeking force”
A young woman comes to our practice.
“I cannot connect with my roots. It became clear during a training where we had to do an exercise—I start trembling in my legs as if I cannot stand on them.”
“Are you trembling with anger?” I ask her, noting that I work from immediacy—that is, I respond directly, as much as possible without the mediation of any story or concept. At the same time, I notice that one of her eyes seems to look past the line of the other, as if she is looking at two elements behind her rather than allowing them to come together in front of her. She hesitates in her body for a moment and then says she is afraid of anger, because then everything will explode. She supports this sentence with a movement of her hands moving apart.
“My father has bipolar disorder; he has been manic-depressive, and my parents divorced when I was sixteen.”
I share with her that splitting can sometimes be a viable solution for something so large and painful that it cannot be faced directly, and I immediately ask whether such an event occurred in her father’s lineage. She responds that her grandfather hanged himself, and that her father found him. Again, that look in her eyes. I point it out to her and reflect that her hands just made a one-second micro-constellation.
“I am also afraid that I might go mad, or that something of this is in me as well.”
Again, that look—and now I hear myself say to her:
“I can see in your eyes the look your father had when he found your grandfather.”
Now her face begins to tremble as well. In this trembling, there is a profound sense of connection with her roots.
“You already are your herd. The invitation here is to fully allow yourself to be this completely, right in the trembling—including the ‘madness.’ The trembling is your life force seeking to fully express itself within you.”
An image arises in me of a plant that first allows water to reach its roots and now allows that water to reach its leaves. I encourage her to let herself be fully taken in by this life force, so that she can completely coincide with her inner herd.
Sometimes parents save for their children so that the children may have something left over; yet sometimes we see the opposite—parents sacrifice themselves in order to spare their children.
In this way, the experience of trauma can be felt as a natural, storyless response of the body—painful and full of life force. For me, this is surrender: the willingness, even if only for a moment, to give up knowing what will happen next.
The trembling of the coachee above brought her back into tune with her inner herd, but also with life force itself. Surrender to life force then means that you give yourself over, without any condition, to (in the case of trauma) the pain. You allow that there is no other or better reality than the one that is being offered to you now. You let yourself be carried, as it were, by life force—including its expression: the pain. You allow life force to take over. You allow the water to be turbulent, with waves—and you also allow these waves to return again to stillness.
