30th Anniversary Celebration Chronicles - Day 2

Our tour of Rome was only two stops today: Colosseum and The Vatican. We decided not to enter the Colosseum, simply a photo op. That was the easy part. The challenge was navigating the street “vendors” peddling hats and fans and water and attraction tickets and drawings and wrist jewelry and designer knock-offs. We were approached 50-11 times and a few times, Terroll had to match their aggression. It wasn’t pleasant at all. We didn’t stay long.

We grabbed lunch then taxied to Vatican City. Today is Feast Day of Saints Peter and Paul, a religious holiday. The Vatican and the Sistine Chapel were closed so we entered St. Peter’s Basilica. In observance, the Basilica entry was gratis, having a direct impact to the increased attendance despite the record high heatwave.

I grew up Catholic; it was heartwarming for Terroll to express awe and appreciation for the artifacts and symbols of my religious upbringing.

We say goodnight to Rome with drinks on the hotel’s rooftop terrace and the perfect view of a fireworks show! The cross-breeze adds to the pleasant end of a short, but delightful visit. Arrivederci, Roma!

30th Anniversary Celebration Chronicles - Day 1

The first day is always brutal after a long day of travel. Despite sleeping most of the nine hour fight, we deplaned this morning in a stupor. Local time was 9 am, but our bodies knew it was 3 am ET.

First stop, Rome. Rome is a rough and rugged city. Walking its cobbled-stone streets challenge your gross motor skills,
activates clumsiness and you long for your usual sure-footedness. The sidewalks are narrow. People, fast zippy egg-beaters and loud motor scooters are right up on you. But there is so much to see and drink in, and walking is the best way to accomplish that. Here we go…

First things first: it. is. hot. Temps are in the high 90s with an average 40% humidity. Even by our Florida tolerances, it is hot! It’s hard to ignore, but you do your best and keep it moving, often slowly.

Immediately, I realize a heavy police presence that I hadn’t seen on previous visits. Rifle-armed guards, patrol cars and mounted police are evidence that the world is indeed changing - everywhere.

Nonetheless, tourism is alive and thriving. Today’s sites included The Pantheon, Trevor Fountain and Spanish Steps. The streets were bustling with site-gawking, photo-grabbing, cutely-dressed tourists.

Over 16k steps accomplished. Time to shower and rest for Day 2.

30th Anniversary Celebration Chronicles - Travel Day

You may not know how we got here, so can I tell you?

Monday, March 8th, 1993, I saw him walk into the building and my heart awakened.

Hours later, my need for a computer sent me on a quest to match a name scribbled on a Post-It to one on a cubicle nameplate. As God would have it, I found myself face-to-face with what was to be my destiny.

Our encounter was easy - in exchange for a piece of candy, I would receive a new computer, fresh out of the box. To his surprise, I produced a piece of Grandma peppermint from my jacket pocket along with a smile at my win. Not long after, my brand new computer was up and running.

Our last first date was that Friday.

He was (and is!) the coolest dude I’d met in years. I liked his confidence, he liked my smile. T-Rob was born.

In ‘95, we promised to take on the world together. And what a ride it has been - up, down, sideways, inside out, round and round, over, under, fast, slow and sometimes not at all. But always, always together.

Love and Family is our sweet concoction. It’s a healthy mix of Truth, trust, adoration, mischief, misdeeds, mistakes, forgiveness, gratitude, hope, faith, hard-fought battles, and steadfast commitment. It is our one well-executed plan.

Marriage is a sacred, spiritual dance of souls caught in a wispy breeze of time. I am sincerely grateful for our journey and every single thing it has birthed. Here’s to 30 more!
