With a 176 m² SemperGreenwall Outdoor, the Hygiene Institute of the Ruhr Region in Gelsenkirchen has gained a vibrant, green appearance. This vertical garden brings nature back into the built environment and creates a pleasant, healthy environment for visitors and employees.

It’s a relevant question as we face more frequent and intense periods of heat. Buildings, streets and other hard surfaces absorb and retain heat, making urban areas considerably warmer.

Green can help make a difference! Existing green roofs and façades already prove to be more heat-resistant and help lower urban temperatures. By turning more of these grey surfaces green, we can create long-term, climate-resilient places to live.

At the energy-neutral Terwijde Gymnasium in Utrecht, living walls bring the façades to life. Together with a green roof and renewable energy, they turn this sports hall into a great example of how nature and architecture can work together.

A perfect blend of luxury, greenery, and sustainable energy: this high-end residence was designed with a strong connection to its surroundings in mind.

On the roof, 55 lightweight vertical solar units rise between the Sedum. Rather than covering the greenery, they leave room for it to grow while generating renewable energy from both sides.

The result? A solar green roof that contributes to energy generation, water retention and biodiversity, all on the same surface. And, thanks to the energy generation, the house operates almost energy-neutrally in summer.

This project demonstrates what nature-inclusive architecture can look like when greenery and technology are part of the design from day one.
