A note of thanks from Liz (Age Group Lead)for 2026.
There are moments in sport when you win medals, and there are moments that change a sport forever; make history. Both are incredibly important and both happened this year!
A year ago, after the trials, there was a conversation. A slightly crazy idea. What if those players who had just missed out on selection didn’t simply go home and wait another year? What if we believed in the strength of our age group enough to create an England O50 Women’s B Team?
Some thought it was too ambitious. Some thought it might never work. Some said it would be too much work.
Today, that dream stands proudly as World Champions.
What fills me with pride isn’t just the gold and silver medals around our necks. It’s the journey that got us here. It’s seeing the standard of hockey in our age group rise year after year. It’s watching players who once wondered if they were “good enough” grow into confident England internationals. It’s knowing we’ve created more opportunities, more memories and more England caps than any of us thought possible.
To have been in Rotterdam as Age Group Leader, watching our B team make history with World Cup gold, while also having the privilege of being Assistant Coach to our A team, who fought so brilliantly for World Cup silver, is something I will treasure forever.
Neither medal belongs to me. They belong to every player who believed. Every family member who sacrificed time with their loved ones. Every person on management who gave their time. Every supporter who cheered us on either from the sidelines or their comfy armchair. Every trialist who showed us this should happen.
To Lisa Prince, Jane Clarke, Denise Fountain, Livie Dorgan and Lorna Burns —thank you. Thank you for believing in the vision, for your endless professionalism, your unwavering support, your friendship, and your determination to give these women the very best experience possible. Working alongside you has been one of the greatest honours of my life.
Thank you to Steve Floyd and England Masters Hockey for giving us the green light immediately, without question!
And to every woman who has pulled on an England shirt over the last season —you have built something far bigger than yourselves. You have created a legacy. You have shown that age never limits ambition, that dreams don’t have an expiry date, and that believing in people can achieve extraordinary things.
Long after the medals have been put away, I’ll remember the hugs, the tears, the laughter, the songs, the early mornings, the difficult conversations, the courage, the resilience, and the overwhelming pride of watching women represent their country with everything they had.
This wasn’t just about winning hockey matches.
It was about opening doors.
It was about creating opportunities.
It was about believing that everyone deserves the chance to dream.
And somehow… a crazy idea became history.
Thank you for letting me be part of it. I will be forever grateful and forever proud.
