When I make a difficult exercise I always joke around with the students about it being anti dementia exercise. Here is why:
🧠 Can dance support brain health as we age? The research is promising!
Dementia is projected to affect 153 million people worldwide by 2050. Could dance be part of the solution?
🔬 An umbrella review of 10 systematic reviews examined dance interventions in older adults with mild cognitive impairment (MCI) or dementia.
Here’s what researchers found:
🧠 Improved global cognition: Dance was associated with better scores on the MoCA and MMSE, two measures of cognitive function.
🔎 Benefits for cognitive skills: Improvements were also found in tests assessing attention, processing speed, and executive function.
💃 Why dance? It combines physical exercise, coordination, music, creativity, and cognitive engagement.
⚠️ One important caveat: The overall quality of the evidence was low or critically low. More rigorous research is needed, particularly involving people living with dementia.
The takeaway? Dance may offer benefits beyond physical fitness, but we need stronger evidence to understand its role in supporting brain health as we age.
💬 Should dance be more widely explored as part of healthy aging programs?
