About a "bad luck bird" and a "drunken droppie"

Once again our annual exchange has been blessed with good weather. We have enjoyed two days of being outside and for a good deal sitting and playing in the sun, too. It seems we almost always are fortunate in this respect.

For us Dutchies the weekend started a bit in a rush. This year, the English party had discovered there's a high speed train running from Amsterdam, so they took us by surprise in announcing their arrival time at Rotterdam Central Station. But we were there in the nick of time to collect our friends and offer them transport to the grounds of Tennispark Blijdorp.
But of course, our English friends had got up much earlier, since they had a plane to catch which was due to leave at 7.00 in the morning. And if you think about most of them getting to bed after a night of clubbing... they did stay up for over a day!

But I'm ahead of events now. Because at first, it was all about tennis. Contrary to previous occasions we had organized a few rounds of matches to do battle for the cup. And lo and behold, by some strokes of genius and some kind of magic the Sawbo gang, despite being low in numbers, managed to sn**ch the cup away for Aeolus-Oledo with 55 to 54 games. So the English could carry the cup home and the Dutch will have to try and fetch it back next year.
After this had been settled, we went on playing our usual friendly matches. Although friendly? In one encouter Pim hit Frank on the bridge of his sunglasses, and thus on the nose, with a blood stained shirt as a result.

Later that evening we had a very pleasant meal in Café Bergpolder. By that time, some beers had been consumed already, but some of us followed that up amply in the cafe, thus preparing for the rest of the night. By the way, it seems that trying to ride a bicycle in the late hours in Rotterdam is not a very good idea if you're note quite used to it. Or was it for another reason?

Despite maybe some lack of sleep, all of us more or less succeeded in being back at the club on Sunday afternoon around 13.00. And though some were a bit reluctant to take to the courts at first, we enjoyed having a number of games again.

At the end of the afternoon we had our own closure ceremony. This is were the trophies came in that Sjoerd had provided. Of course Frank was the main candidate for the "bad luck bird" (as unlucky person had been translated in Dunglish). And the nomination of the "drunken droppie" wasn't very difficult either, as Dominic instantly realised. Furthermore, newcomers Adam and Dominic were presented with a towel, on which a new title to add to their cv. And oh yes, the cup of course passed on into English hands...

At last, after snacks and drinks, it was farewells and goodbyes. We hope to have yet another edition of the exchange in Sawbridgeworth again.
